더불어민주당 장종태 전 대전 서구청장이 제8회 전국동시지방선거 대전시장 예비후보 등록을 마치고 대전시장 출마를 공식화했다.
장종태 전 서구청장은 16일 대전시선거관리위원회에서 대전시장 예비후보 등록을 마치고 본격적인 경선 채비에 나섰다.
장 전 청장은 대선을 돕기 위해 지난 1월 14일 서구청장을 사퇴했으며 두달 여간 이재명 전 대선후보 선거운동에 올인해 왔다.
예비후보 등록을 마친 장 전 청장은 “죽을힘을 다했지만 대선에서 승리하지 못했다. 민선 7기 대전을 바라보는 대전 시민들의 민심을 무겁게 받아드린다”면서 “대전시장 도전을 통해 위기를 기회로 만들어 대전에서 다시 파란 물결을 이끌겠다”고 밝혔다.
이어 “지금 대전은 갖가지 국책사업 실패 등 ‘대전패싱’이 잇따르고 있는 위기상황”이라며 “대전이 키운 ‘행정전문가’로서 서구를 성공적으로 잘 이끈 만큼 이제는 대전시장이 돼 대전을 ‘더 강한 대전’으로 만들 것”이라고 말했다.
특히 대선 실패로 낙담하고 있을 민주당 지지자들과 시민들에게도 위로를 전했다.
장 전 청장은 “대선 결과에 너무 좌절하지 말고 서로를 다독이고 더 힘내서 앞으로 나아가자”며 “여러분의 단결된 힘으로 6월 1일 대전을 지켜달라”고 호소했다.
한편, 장 전 청장은 중구 서대전네거리 인근에 선거사무실을 마련하고 개소식을 준비하는 등 본격적인 선거전에 돌입했다.
