브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 유승민 전 국민의힘 의원이 6·1지방선거 경기도지사 출마 선언과 관련, 가족들도 만류했지만 가장 험지에서 총대를 멘다는 각오로 뛰어들었다고 털어놨다.
유승민 전 의원은 1일 CBS 라디오 '김현정의 뉴스쇼'에서 "(딸 유담도) '아빠 이제 좀 쉬고 자유롭게 다른 보람 있는 일 하면 안 돼?'라며 말리더라"라고 밝혔다.
그는 "사실 대선 직후 정치를 그만둘 생각을 확고하게 하고 있었다"며 "정치를 23년째 하고 있는데, 사람이 물러날 때도 알아야 하니까 그런 생각을 했다"고 말했다.
이어 그는 "사람이 꼭 정치를 해야만 사회에 기여하는 건 아니니까 정치를 그만두더라도 다른 방법으로 우리 사회에 조금이라도 기여할 수 있는 길이 있지 않겠느냐는 생각을 했다"고 부연했다.
그는 그럼에도 출마를 하게된 이유에 대해 "굉장히 어려운 선거라서 굉장히 고민을 많이 했다"면서 "정치를 그만두려고 결심한 사람이 경기지사 자리에 욕심이 뭐가 있겠느냐. 국민의힘 입장에서 제일 험지니까 총대를 메고 각오를 하고 뛰어든 것"이라고 말했다.

진행자가 '가족들이 말리진 않았냐'고 묻자 그는 "워낙 옆에서 고생하는 걸 보니까 어머니, 형, 누나 다 말렸다. 딸 유담도 "이제 좀 쉬고 자유롭게 다른 보람있는 일 하면 안 되냐"고 만류했다"고 전하면서도 "하지만 마지막 결정의 순간에는 가족들 다 (출마에) 동의했다. 결심한 다음부터는 도와주리라고 기대한다"고 했다.
경기도에 연고가 없음에도 출마했다는 일각의 비판에 대해선 "경기도 토박이 출신이 경기지사가 되어야 한다고 생각하신다면 저는 상당히 부족할 것이다. 하지만 히딩크 감독이 대한민국 국적과 연고가 있어서 한국 축구 월드컵 4강을 만든 게 아니지 않나. 많은 경기도민이 원하는 건 능력 있는 사람"이라고 답했다.
한편 유 전 의원은 전날 국회에서 기자회견을 열고 경기도지사 출마를 선언했다. 그는 "경기도는 인구 1천400만명, 대한민국 경제와 산업의 중심이고 국가안보의 보루"라며 "23년 정치의 한복판에서 바람과 서리를 맞으며 키운 제 모든 역량을 쏟아부어 경기도, 대한민국을 위해 저를 바치겠다는 약속을 드린다"고 각오를 다졌다.

Former lawmaker Yoo Seung Min confessed that his family also dissuaded him from running for governor of Gyeonggi-do in the June 1 local election, but he jumped in with the determination to take the lead in the most dangerous area.

"In fact, I was firmly thinking of quitting politics right after the presidential election," he said. "I've been doing politics for 23 years, and I thought that because I needed to know when a person stepped down."
He added, "People don't necessarily contribute to society only when they do politics, so even if they quit politics, I thought there would be a way to contribute to our society in a different way."
Nevertheless, as for the reason for running, he said, "It was a very difficult election, so I thought a lot about it," adding, "What would a person who decided to quit politics be greedy for the position of governor of Gyeonggi-do?" It's the most dangerous place for the people, so I'm determined to jump in with my gun."
When the host asked, "Didn't your family stop you?" he said, "Seeing you suffering next to me, my mother, brother, and sister all stopped you. His daughter Yudam also said, "Can't we take a break now and do other rewarding things freely?" but said, "But at the moment of the final decision, all my family agreed (to run). I expect him to help me after he makes up his mind."
Regarding some criticism that he ran even though he had no connection with Gyeonggi-do, he said, "If you think a native of Gyeonggi-do should become governor of Gyeonggi-do, I will be quite insufficient. However, Hiddink did not make it to the semifinals of the Korean Football World Cup because of his connection with the Korean nationality. What many Gyeonggi residents want is a competent person."
Meanwhile, Yoo held a press conference at the National Assembly the previous day and announced his candidacy for governor of Gyeonggi Province. Gyeonggi-do has a population of 14 million, the center of the Korean economy and industry, and a bastion of national security, he said. "I promise to dedicate myself to Gyeonggi-do and the Republic of Korea by pouring out all my capabilities raised in the middle of politics in 23 years."
