브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 정치권에선 6·1 지방선거 투표율이 예상보다 저조한 수준을 보이자, 여야 어디에 유리할지 머리가 복잡해진 분위기다.
중앙선거관리위원회에 따르면 지방선거 본투표일인 이날 오후 5시 기준 전국 4430만3449명의 유권자 중 2115만여명이 투표에 참여하면서 47.6%의 투표율을 기록 중이다.
이는 지난 4년 전 제7회 지방선거 동시간대(56.1%)와 비교하면 8.5%포인트나 낮은 수준이다.
현재의 추세대로라면 최종 투표율은 50%를 조금 웃도는 수준이 될 것으로 예상된다.
정치권에선 이에 따라 낮은 투표율이 국민의힘과 더불어민주당 중 어느 당에 더 유리할지 각종 분석이 나오곤 있으나, 쉽게 예단하기는 힘든 상황이다.
전통적으로 투표율이 높으면 진보 진영에, 투표율이 낮으면 보수에 유리하다는 것으로 통용돼 왔으나, 최근엔 각 상황별, 세대별, 성별 등에 따라 결과가 갈려 일반적인 잣대를 들이대긴 힘들다는 게 중론이다.
당장 국민의힘과 민주당 모두 낮은 투표율을 놓고 '우려'를 드러내고 있다. 국민의힘측에선 압도적 승리를 확신했으나 낮은 투표율 탓에 원하는 목표를 달성할 수 없을지도 모른다며 지지자들의 투표를 독려했다.
민주당 역시 당초 불리하다는 판세 분석이 잇따르자 지지층들이 아예 투표를 포기해버린 게 아니냐고 걱정하며 투표 독려에 총력전을 폈다.
전문가들 역시 신중한 입장으로 바라봤다. 뉴시스는 박상병 정치평론가의 말을 인용해 "투표율만 갖고 누구에게 유리할지 해석하기 힘들다. 투표율이 낮으면 조직표가 많은 민주당이 유리하다고 볼 수 있지만 반대로 국민의힘 입장에서는 야권 바람이 불어야 하는데 바람이 안 불어서 투표율이 낮은 것이라고 볼 수도 있다"고 했다. 같은 사안을 놓고 전혀다르게 해석이 가능하다는 것이다.
뉴시스는 신율 명지대 교수의 말도 인용 "대선 겪고 나서 몇 달 안 지나 하는 선거이기 때문에 선거 피로증이 있을 수 있다. 유권자들은 최근 대선 때 들은 얘기를 또 듣는다고 생각할 수 있다"며 이번 선거에 관심이 낮을 수 밖에 없다고 설명했다.
