에코미디어 출판사측은 “사진가 마동욱이 최근 장흥댐 건설로 가장 먼저 사라진 마을이었던 장흥군 부산면 지천리 지동마을 사진집 <꿈속의 고향>(양장본/올칼라/규격:29.5cmx21.5cm/320P/에코미디어 刊/￦50,000)을 출간(출판사=에코미디어)했다. 그의 16번째 사진집이지만, 그의 유치 수몰마을 사진집으로는 〈아! 물에 잠길 내고향>(1997), <아! 물에 잠긴 내고향>(2020)에 이어 세 번째 사진집”이라고 전하고 ”장흥댐 건설 추진 때부터 최근까지 거의 30여년 간 줄기차게 유치수몰 지역에 대한 사진작업을 해 온 마동욱 작가의 또 하나의 결실이 <꿈속의 고향>이다. 마동욱 작가는 댐 건설 전부터 댐 건설 현장이 될 지동마을 수시로 드나들며 마을의 풍경, 마을의 주택과 골목골목, 마을 사람들, 마을의 문화를 비롯하여 마을이 파괴되어가는 모습이며 댐 건설 현장 등을 20,000여 장의 사진으로 담아왔다. 그 사진 중 1,200여 장을 추려 <꿈속의 고향>에다 기동마을을 재현해 냈다“고 소개했다.
댐 건설로 흔적 없이 철저히 파괴되어버려 꿈속에서나마 볼 수 있었던 지동마을이 사진집 <꿈속에 마을>에 재현된 것. 이 사진집은 마을 집과 골목, 마을 산소 이장, 마을 사람들, 마을 사람들의 이주와 철거, 댐 준공과 망향제 등 주제 별로 구분하여 사진들을 편집했다. 또 ‘지동마을의 역사와 마을 이야기’(김선욱), ‘지동마을 사진들에 대한 감상‧평’(백수인), ‘마을사람의 마을 추억담’(임용순). ‘시(詩)-고향생각 외’(임필순), ‘시(詩)-도깨비 잔치’(백수인) ‘갓골마을-망향제’(문충선), ‘한국동란 때 총탄 맞은 정자나무 이야기’(문충선) 등의 글도 함께 실었다.

마동욱 작가는 “이번 지동마을 사진집은 사진 작품집이라기보다 이제는 다시 볼 수 없이 사라저 버린 지동마을을 기억할 수 있는 한권의 앨범이라고 생각한다. 25년 전 지동마을에서 일어났던 마을 공동체의 부서져가는 과정을 사진으로 기록한 것이다”고 말했다.
백수인 시인(조선대 명예교수)은 “…이 사진집은 단순히 역사적 기록으로서의 의미만을 담고 있지 않다. 평화로운 마을의 모습에서부터 댐 건설이 고시되면서 출렁이기 시작한 민심, 댐 문제점에 대한 공청회, 주민들의 댐 반대운동, 조상의 묘 이장, 문화재 발굴조사, 주민들의 이거, 마을 철거, 마을이 사라진 뒤 망향비 아래서의 망향제까지의 과정을 세세히 담고 있다. …이 사진들에는 마을 주민들과 그 풍경이 가지는 서정에서부터 그 과정이 지니는 서사가 어우러진 역사성을 담고 있다. …이 사진집은 따뜻하고 정겨운 서정에서 시작하여 결국 정둔 집과 마을을 떠나야 하는 지경에 이르기까지의 과정을 다양한 서사로 표현해 내고 있다. …중요한 것은 이 사진집에는 마동욱 작가의 고향 사랑에 대한 정신과 마을 주민들과 함께하는 따뜻한 마음이 녹아있다는 것이다.”고 평가했다.
한편, 마동욱 작가는 오는 21일(목) 오후 3시 장흥군민회관에서 <꿈속의 고향> 출판기념회 및 사진전시회를 갖는다. 전시회는 25일(월)까지 5일동안 같은 장소에서 개최된다.
