최성 전 경기 고양시장이 김대중 전 대통령 13주기를 맞아 워싱턴 D.C 에서 열리는 추모행사 참석을 위해 미국 길에 오른다.
16일 최성 전 시장에 따르면 오는 18일 오전10시(미국 현지시간)김대중 전 대통령 13주기를 맞아 워싱턴 D.C 에서 추모행사가 진행된다.
(사)한반도평화경제연구원 이사장과 (사)김대중대통령 기념사업회 산하 김대중 사상 계승발전위원장을 맡고 있는 최 전 시장(사진)도 행사에 참석해 추도식 인사말과 함께 특별강연회도 가질 예정이다.

최 전 시장은 김대중 대통령의 워싱턴 망명시절부터 동지적 활동을 해 오던 ‘김대중 대통령 기념 사업회 추모기념 준비위원회’의 초청을 받아 ‘김대중 사상의 측면에서 바라본 한국 민주주의 해법’을 주제로 특강을 한다고 설명했다.
최 전 시장 일행은 18일에 있을 추도식 이후 장소를 옮겨 같은 날 오후2시~6시까지 워싱턴 D.C. 링컨기념관(Lincoln Memorial Plaze)앞에서 ‘워싱턴 D.C. 망명시절의 김대중 선생 사진전’을 개최할 예정이다.
또 이 자리에서는 망명 당시 함께 활동했던 원로동지들과 함께 당시 시위장면도 재현할 계획이다.
특히 최 전시장 일행은 추도식 하루 전날인 17일 이번 행사를 주관한 (사)김대중 대통령 워싱턴 본부의 임원진과 함께 김대중 전 대통령의 워싱턴 망명시절 민주화운동을 한 워싱턴 한인 수도 교회와 워싱턴 인권문제연구소, 사저인 워터게이트 아파트, 시국강연을 한 조지워싱턴대학 강당 등 일명 '김대중 여로'라는 현장을 방문할 예정이다.
또 20일에는 뉴욕을 찾아 세계한인경제인협회(월드옥타)뉴욕지회 임원들과 간담회를 열고 21일에는 뉴욕의 김대중 대통령 기념 사업회 임원들과 함께 DJ 추도 13주기 사진전을 가질 예정이다.
최성 전 시장은 “망명 당시 김대중 대통령의 시국강연의 육성목소리를 보관하고 있는 미주한국방송에서 아직까지 한 번도 공개하지 않은 당시의 육성테이프를 저를 통해 연세대학교 김대중 도서관에 기증할 예정”이라며“오는26일 귀국하면 (사)한반도평화경제연구원 미주지부출범과 (사)김대중대통령 기념사업회 산하 김대중 사상 계승발전위원회와 관련된 글로벌 네트워크를 적극 활성화시킬 계획”이라고 말했다.[고양=박정호기자]
