브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 한덕수 국무총리가 28일 일본 기시다 후미오(岸田文雄) 총리를 만나 양국간 관계 개선을 위한 발전 방안을 논의했다.
한덕수 총리는 아베 신조 전 일본 총리 국장 참석을 위해 일본을 방문했으며 이날 오전 도쿄 아카사카 영빈관에서 기시다 총리와 약 25분 가량 면담했다.
한 총리는 이 자리에서 "한일 양국은 가까운 이웃이고, 또 민주주의 가치와 시장경제 원칙을 공유하는 중요한 협력 파트너"라며 "윤석열 정부는 한일 관계를 조속히 개선하고 발전시키는 것이 공통의 이익에 부합한다고 보고 있다"고 말했다.
그는 또한 아베 전 총리 별세에 대해 애도를 표했으며 지난주 태풍 피해를 입은데 대해서도 위로의 말을 전하며 조속한 피해 복구가 되길 바란다고 했다.
일본 NHK의 보도에 따르면 기시다 총리는 이날 면담에서 윤석열 대통령 등 다수의 한국분들로부터 아베 전 총리의 정중한 조의를 받았다고 말하며 감사함을 표했다고 했다.
또한 한일 관계를 개선하고 더욱 발전시켜 나가기 위해 양국 간 의사소통을 넓혀가는데 공감대를 이뤘다고 전했다.
아울러 북한에 대응하기 위해 협력 추진에 대한 중요성도 공유했다고 일본 외무성은 밝혔다.

이와 관련 조현동 외교부 1차관은 브리핑을 통해 "관계 개선의 중요한 전기가 마련된 자리"라고 평가하며 "한일 정상 간 현안 해결과 양국 관계 개선 필요성에 공감한 것을 토대로 기시다 총리와 강제징용 문제 해결을 포함한 개선발전 방안을 논의했다"며 "이를 위한 구체적인 방안을 모색하기 위해 양국 외교 당국 간 협의를 다양한 차원에서 가속화하자는 데 의견을 같이 했다"고 말했다.
조현동 1차관은 이어 "지난 25일 북한 탄도미사일 발사 등 국제 정세를 감안해 한반도는 물론 지역 글로벌 차원의 평화와 안정을 위해 한일 및 한미일 간의 긴밀한 협력을 강화하자는 데 공감했다"고 전했다.
다만 강제징용 문제와 관련해선 "양측은 최선의 해결 방법을 찾아야 한다고 공감했다"면서도 구체적 내용이 오가지는 않았다고 했다.
아울러 이날 면담에서 한일정상회의에 대한 언급은 없었다고 전하며 "11월이 되면 아세안(동남아시아 국가 연합·ASEAN) 정상회의을 비롯해 다자 정상회담 계기가 있는데 그때 성사될 가능성은 염두에 두고 있다"고 했다.
