브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 윤희근 경찰청장은 1일 이태원 참사와 관련, 사고 당일 112신고가 다수 있었음에도 현장 대응이 미흡했다며 대국민 사과를 했다.
윤희근 청장은 이날 서울 서대문구 경찰청에서 브리핑을 갖고 "사고가 발생하기 직전에 현장의 심각성을 알리는 112신고가 다수 있었음에도 불구하고 112신고를 처리하는 현장의 대응은 미흡했다"며 고개를 숙였다.
윤 청장은 "신고 내용을 보면, 사고 발생 이전부터 많은 군중이 몰려 사고의 위험성을 알리는 급박한 내용들이었다"며 제대로 대응하지 못했음을 인정했다.
이어 "이번 사건의 진상을 명확히 밝히고 책임을 규명하기 위해 모든 부분에 대해 예외 없이 강도 높은 감찰과 수사를 신속하고 엄밀하게 진행하겠다"면서 "특히 사전에 위험성을 알리는 112신고를 받고 제대로 조치했는지에 대해 사실관계를 철저히 확인하겠다"고 말했다.
윤 청장은 "현장 대응의 적정성과 각급 지휘관과 근무자들의 조치가 적절했는지 등도 빠짐없이 조사할 것"이라며 "이를 위해 오늘부터 경찰청에 독립적 특별기구를 설치해 투명하고 엄정하게 사안의 진상을 밝히겠다"고 약속했다.
그러면서 "이번 사고를 지켜보면서 큰 충격을 받으셨을 국민들께도 관계기관장의 한 사람으로서 무거운 책임감을 느낀다. 국민안전에 대한 무한 책임을 다시 한번 통감하면서 앞으로 이와 같은 비극적인 일이 다시는 발생하지 않도록 최선을 다하겠다"고 덧붙였다.

한편 윤 청장은 사고 당일 현장 배치된 경찰 인력을 묻는 질문에 "올해 방역이 완화되면서 다수의 인원이 집결할 것으로 예상했고 보고도 있었기 때문에 용산경찰서에서는 많은 인원을 투입한다고 대비를 한 게 137명이었다"고 답했다.
