한 부모 가구 및 1인 가구의 증가, 독거노인의 증가, 미혼율과 이혼율 증가…… 이와 같은 가족 상황에서 시인들이 추구하는 가족애는 의미가 크다. 가족 사랑이야말로 이 자본주의 사회에서 소외된 사람들을 끌어안는 구체적인 방법이다. 이 평론집에서 맹문재 시인이 궁극적으로 추구하는 가치이기도 하다.

1부에는 경물을 바라보며 가족과 연인은 물론 자신이 살아가는 세계에 대한 사랑을 노래한 유진택 시집 『염소와 꽃잎』을 시작으로, 이흔복 시인의 시 세계를 이루는 토대이자 궁극적으로 시인이 추구하는 인생관인 인학(仁學)을 다룬 『내 생에 아름다운 봄날』, 그 외에도 박노식, 권진희, 김종상 등의 시 세계를 살펴본다. 2부에서는 이인호, 김승종, 최부식, 서상규, 김재혁, 최동호 등의 작품을 탐구하였으며, 3부에서는 이삼현, 허윤설, 윤중목, 정진남의 시와 박금아의 수필에 나타난 가족애의 시학을 소개하고 있다. 4부에서는 광부시인 성희직, 정연수 시인의 작품에 나타난 노동문학의 가치를 비롯해, 베트남의 음식, 가족, 혼례 등을 노래한 박경자 시인, 그 외 조미희, 황주경, 박석준 시인의 시 세계를 살펴본다.
자본주의가 심화되는 오늘의 상황에서 경물을 통한 사랑의 변주는 큰 의미를 갖는다. 자본가는 자기 자본의 확장과 권력 유지에 지대한 관심을 갖고 있고, 노동자는 거대한 자본에 맞서는 노동조합에 결탁되어 결국 자립심을 잃고 있기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 분업화되고 기계화되고 자동화된 노동 과정에서 노동자는 공장의 소모품으로 전락되어 개성을 상실하고 있기 때문이다. 시장의 상품으로 취급받는 노동자는 자신으로부터도, 사람들로부터도, 그리고 자연으로부터도 소외되고 있다. 의식주를 해결하고 문화생활을 영위하고 세계를 바라보는 많은 정보를 소유하고 있지만 자아의 상실로 말미암아 피상적인 존재에 불과한 것이다. 따라서 경물을 통해 가족애와 이성애와 사회애를 추구하는 시인의 세계 인식은 주목된다. 사랑의 본질을 회복하고 사랑의 의의를 인식하고 사랑의 가치를 지향하기 때문이다.
가족 공동체가 사라지고 사회 공동체 또한 확립되지 않은 상황에 대한 안전망이 필요하다. 가족관계를 이루려는 노력을 사회 통합을 이루는 행동과 함께하는 것이 필요한 것이다. 사회가 분열되거나 갈등하는 정도가 낮고 불평등이 심하지 않으면 사회의 규범과 규칙이 제대로 작동하고, 사회 구성원들 간에도 신뢰를 가지게 된다. 평등한 관계로 함께 실천하는 모성이야말로 자본주의 사회의 경쟁적인 개인주의를 지양하고 공동체적인 인간 가치를 이룰 수 있는 길이다.
