성희직 시인은 1957년 경북 영천시에서 태어나 중장비 기사로 일하다가 1986년 초 강원도 정선군 삼척탄좌의 채탄 광부가 되었다. 1989년 노동조건 개선 투쟁 중에 첫 번째 단지(斷指)를 했다. 1991년 민중당 후보로 도의원에 당선된 뒤 3선을 했고 강원도의회 부의장을 지냈다. 1994년에 사랑의장기기증운동본부를 통해 신장을 기증하였다. 2007년엔 진폐 문제로 31일간 단식투쟁과 두 번째 단지를 했다. 시집으로 『광부의 하늘』 『그대 가슴에 장미꽃 한 송이를』이 있다. 현재 정선진폐상담소 소장으로 일하며 주말에는 농사를 짓고 있다.
