브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 더불어민주당은 19일 박지원 전 국가정보원장에 대한 복당을 결정했다.
이에 박지원 전 원장은 "이재명 대표 중심 강한 야당, 통합 화합하는 야당을 만드는 데 힘을 보태겠다"고 밝혔다.
박지원 전 원장은 이날 자신의 페이스북을 통해 "생방송 출연 중에 민주당 복당이 결정됐다는 소식을 들었다. 당원, 당 지도부, 민주당 의원, 국민들께 감사드린다"며 이같이 말했다.
박 전 원장은 2016년 1월 22일 탈당한 뒤 안철수 대표가 이끌던 국민의당에 합류했다. 그는 탈당 후 6년 11개월여만에 다시 민주당으로 돌아오게 됐다.
그는 다시 민주당 복당 신청을 결정하게 된 이유에 대해 "당의 요청과 김대중 대통령이 창당한 당에서 마지막 정치 인생을 마무리해야 한다는 생각에 복당을 희망했다"고 설명했다.
이어 "일부의 염려가 있었다는 것도 잘 알고 있다"고 말했다. 앞서 정청래 수석 최고위원은 "박지원 전 원장의 복당은 분열의 씨앗, 재앙이 될 수 있다"면서 "2015년 전당대회와 19대 대선 때 문재인 대통령을 공격한 것에 대한 반성과 사과, 당 화합에 앞장서겠다는 뜻, 정권교체에 힘을 보태겠다라는 뜻을 밝혀야 복당을 받아 들이겠다"고 강하게 우려를 드러낸 바 있다.
이에 박지원 전 원장은 "(정청래 최고위원 등이) 보내주신 그 사랑과 염려에 누가 되지 않도록 잘하겠다"며 "저는 민주주의를 지키고 남북 관계를 개선하는 데 벽돌 한 장이라도 놓을 것"이라고 했다.
특히 "민주주의를 지키고 남북관계를 개선하는데 벽돌 한장이라도 놓겠으며 무엇보다도 이재명 대표를 중심으로 강한 야당, 통합 화합하는 야당을 만드는데 힘을 보태겠다"고 약속했다.
한편 민주당 지도부는 이날 박지원 전 원장의 복당을 놓고 이견 대립이 있었다고 전했다. 하지만 대승적 차원에서 그의 복당을 승인하는 방향으로 의견 일치를 봤다고 했다.
이에 대해 박성준 민주당 대변인은 "최고위원 간 (의견이) 팽팽했다. 하지만 이재명 대표가 '대승적, 대통합 차원'에서 박 전 원장의 복당을 수용하자는 의견을 제시했고, 이를 최고위원들이 수용했다"고 전했다.
