가모갤러리(대표 Helen YOON. 서울시 종로구 삼청로 96-1)는 화인조형연구소의 기획으로 미국과 한국에서 활동 중인 Joanne Lee 작가의 개인전을 2022년 12월 6일부터 2023년 1월 30일까지 개최한다.
가모갤러리측은 “Joanne Lee(조앤 리) 작가는 한국과 해외(미국 일본 홍콩 등)에서 의자 작가로 알려져 있으며 현재 한국과 미국을 오가며 왕성한 활동을 하고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 노동집약적 회화로 다양한 컬러에 내재되어 있는 깊은 감흥과 추억, 그리고 그 내면에 새겨진 흔적들을 ‘실 찍기’라는 신체적 행위로 치환하여 표현해내는 것이 특징이다. 그녀의 ‘실 찍기’ 행위는 부단한 노력의 결과이기도 하며 그녀 자신을 표현하는 가장 최적화된 표현방법이기도 하다. 그 표현을 통해 재현된 화면은 초창기 작품에서 드러난 시공간의 추억을 넘어 그녀 자신이 겪었던 이방인으로써의 감정과 사유를 통한 진실된 서사 그 자체”라고 소개하고 “이 전시를 통해 관람객들은 작품이 전달하는 색(色)의 향연을 만끽하고, 내재된 감정도 함께 느끼며 내면에 숨겨진 나만의 색과 추억 속 감정을 소환하기 바란다”고 희망했다.

Joanne Lee 작가는 전시회에 관해 “전통 채색화 기법으로 만들어낸 색의 공간은 그날의 기억에 따라 밝은 노랑이기도 하고 짙은 파랑이기도 하며 때로는 핑크가 된다. 전통 채색이 주는 색의 깊이는 내가 가장 잘 표현할 수 있는 어떤 날의 기억들이다. 그리고 실의 흔적을 쌓으면서 그 사물에 쌓여진 시간을 그린다. 하나의 사물이 지니는 여러 가지 사건들과 의미들을 실로 흔적을 남기면서 표현하며 조용히 시간이 흐르는 공간이 주는 많은 감정들을 그림을 통해 전달하고자 한다. 고국을 떠나 미국에 자리 잡게 되면서 낯선 공간과 가장 익숙한 공간. 그림을 바라보며 울었던 공간과 길을 잃고 헤매던 두려움의 공간들. 그 수많은 공간들과 그 안의 사물들, 그리고 그 안에 흐르던 시간의 기억들을 그려본다. 내가 지금 존재하는 공간과 존재했던 공간. 그리고 앞으로 존재하게 될 공간. 그런 모든 공간들을 사유하며 나에겐 익숙하지만 그들에게는 낯선 재료와 실로 나를 표현한다.”고 강조했다.

Joanne Lee 작가는 성신여대에서 동양화를 공부하여 학사, 석사 학위를 받고 한국에서 작품 활동을했다. 지난 2010년 미국으로 이주하여 샌프란시스코를 기반으로 현대 회화를 전통의 기법을 통하여 표현하며 작품 활동을 이어 나가고 있다. 한국과 미국에서 7회의 개인전을 개최했다. 그룹 전시로는 중국 베이징올림픽 기념전 광화문 & 천안문전, 한일 현대미술 100인전,여성이 본 한국미술, ART IN THE TIME OF CORONA 등 국내외(일본, 중국, 독일, 이탈리아, 미국) 다수 기획전에 참여했다. Regarding her exhibition, artist Joanne Lee said, “The space of color created with traditional coloring techniques is bright yellow, deep blue, or sometimes pink, depending on the memory of the day. The depth of color given by traditional coloring is the memories of a certain day that I can best express. And while building traces of thread, he draws the time accumulated in those objects. I want to express the various events and meanings of an object while leaving traces, and convey the many emotions of the space where time quietly flows through my paintings. Biography of Joanne Lee
Artist Joanne Lee studied oriental painting at Sungshin Women's University where she received her bachelor's and master's degrees and she worked on her art in Korea. She moved to the United States in 2010, and based in San Francisco, she continues her art activities by expressing her modern paintings through traditional techniques. She has held seven solo exhibitions in Korea and the United States. Group exhibitions include the Beijing Olympic Commemorative Exhibition Gwanghwamun & Tiananmen Exhibition, 100 Korean and Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition, Korean Art Seen by Women, and ART IN THE TIME OF CORONA. He has exhibited at domestic and overseas art fairs such as AHAF, Art Show Busan, SPOON ART FAIR, ART ASIA, and ART KAOHSIUNG. Author Joanne Lee's works are owned by the Jeju Hello Kitty Museum and private collections.
