브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 이재명 더불어민주당 대표의 '변호사비 대납 의혹'의 중심에 서 있는 김성태 전 쌍방울그룹 회장이 오는 17일 귀국한다.
검찰은 그에 대한 조사를 통해 이재명 대표를 둘러싼 핵심 의혹의 진상을 밝힐 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
16일 법조계에 따르면 김성태 전 회장은 오는 17일 오전 국내에 입국한다.
지난 10일 태국 빠툼타니 소재의 한 골프장에서 현지 이민국에 의해 체포된 김 전 회장은 송환 관련 재판을 포기하고 자진귀국 의사를 밝혔다. 이에 검찰은 그가 대한민국 국적기에 탑승하자마자 체포영장을 집행할 계획이다.
김성태 전 회장은 2018~2019년 계열사 임작원 수십명을 동원해 640만달러를 중국으로 밀반출한 뒤, 이 돈을 최종적으로 북한에 건넸다는 의혹을 받고 있다.
또한 이재명 대표가 경기도지사로 재임하던 2018년, 이 지사의 공직선거법 위반 혐의 사건을 맡은 변호인들에게 쌍방울그룹의 전환사채 등을 건넨 바 있다. 이에 대해 검찰은 변호사비 수임료를 대납한 것으로 보고 있다.
다만 김 전 회장은 귀국 전부터 혐의에 대해 전면 부인하고 있다.

김성태 전 회장은 지난 15일 KBS와의 인터뷰에서 "수사 환경이나 가족들 환경이 너무 안 좋아서 빨리 들어가서 사실을 사실대로 밝히려고 했다"고 자진귀국 배경을 밝히며 "(이재명 대표를) 만날 만한 계기도 없고 만날 만한 이유도 없다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "제가 그 사람을 왜 만나겠나. 되려 이재명 때문에 제 인생이 지금 이렇게 초토화됐다"고 어떤 연관성도 없다고 주장했다.
이재명 대표 역시 지난 13일 "저는 김성태라는 사람의 얼굴도 본 적이 없다"면서 "그런데 그 분이 왜 제 변호사비를 내나. 받은 사람은 도대체 누군가"라고 의혹을 부인했다.
한편 검찰은 김 전 회장의 신병이 확보되는 대로 각종 사건 규명을 위한 조사에 들어갈 방침이다. 그가 해외로 장기간 도피행각을 벌인 만큼 구속영장을 청구해 집중조사할 것으로 보인다.
