브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 6일 우리 정부가 일제 강제징용 피해보상과 관련 '제3자 변제' 해법을 발표한데 대해, 조 바이든 미국 대통령은 한일 협력의 새 장을 연 것이라고 환영했다.
기시다 후미오 일본 총리도 한일관계를 다시 건전한 관계로 되돌리는 발표라고 환영의 뜻을 밝혔다.
백악관은 이날 강제징용 해법 발표 직후 바이든 대통령의 성명을 발표, "미국의 가장 가까운 두 동맹국 간의 획기적인 협력과 파트너십의 새로운 장을 열었다"고 평가했다.
백악관은 "윤석열 대통령과 기시다 총리는 두 차례의 역사적인 외교장관 성명을 통해 양국 국민이 보다 안전하고, 안정되고, 번영하는 미래를 만들기 위한 중요한 발걸음을 내디뎠다"면서 "양국의 발걸음은 자유롭고 개방된 인도·태평양에 대한 우리의 비전을 유지하고 발전시키는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 미국은 이번 새로운 합의를 지속적인 발전으로 이어가려는 일본과 한국의 지도자들을 계속 지원할 것"이라고 말했다.

기시다 총리도 이날 오전 참의원(상원) 예산위원회에 출석한 자리에서 "일본 정부로서 일한 관계를 건전한 관계로 되돌리는 것으로 평가한다"고 말했다.
이어 그는 "한국은 국제사회에서 다양한 과제에 대한 대응에 협력해 나가야 할 중요한 이웃나라"라며 "앞으로도 윤석열 대통령과 긴밀히 의사소통을 하며 한일관계를 발전시키고 싶다"고 했다.
한편, 우리 정부는 2018년 대법원으로부터 배상 확정판결을 받은 일제 강제징용 피해자들에게 행정안전부 산하 일제강제동원피해자지원재단(이하 재단)에서 재원을 조성한 뒤 일본 전범기업을 대신해 판결금과 지연이자를 지급하겠다고 공식 발표했다.
