6일 포항해양경찰서(서장 성대훈)는 지난 5일 오후 4시쯤 포항 영일만항 컨테이너 부두에서 기름이 유출됐다는 해양오염 신고를 접수했다고 밝혔다.
A호(9,000톤급, 파나마선적, 컨테이너선)는 같은 날 오전 10시 24분쯤 포항 영일만항컨테이너 부두에 입항했다.
A호 선장은 같은 날 오후 1시 30분쯤 1번 탱크에서 2번 탱크로 유류를 이적하는 도중 기름이 넘치면서 해상으로 유출돼 동해지방해양경찰청 포항항해상교통관세센터(포항항VTS)로 신고했으며, 포항해양경찰서 종합상황실로전달됐다.
포항해양경찰서는 경비함정, 연안구조정, 방제정, 해양오염방제과 등 대응세력을 현장으로 출동시켰다.
포항지방해양수산청, 해양환경공단, 민간 방제업체, 해양자율방제대에 방제작업 지원도 요청했다.
A호에서 유출된 오염물질은 선박연료유인 저유황유(LSFO: Low Sulphur Fuel Oil)로 방제세력이 현장에 도착했을 때 A호와 부두 주변으로 길이 약 300m, 폭 약 10m 정도로 퍼져있는 상태였다.

유출된 기름이 넓은 해역으로 확산되는 것을 막아 해양환경 피해가 커지는 것을 방지하였다.
현재까지 오염 피해사항은 접수되지 않았으며 정확한 유출량은 조사 중이다.
이번 사고로 인한 해양오염 피해가 더 없도록 주변 해안가 및 해수욕장 등광범위하게 순찰활동을 강화하고 오염방제에 최선을 다할 예정이라고 밝혔다.
