남한과 북한은 1991년에 유엔(국제연합)에 동시가입, 국제법상 두 개의 국가이다. 1948년 대한민국 국가수립 이후, 남한과 북한은 여러 가지 경쟁을 해왔었다.
큰 줄기, 몇 가지를 추슬러 본다.
남한은 자본주의, 북한은 공산주의 체제의 국가이다. 남북은 이념의 다름을 기본으로 하는 체제경쟁을 해왔었다. 이 경쟁에서는 남한이 이미 승리했다. 남한은 세계 10대 경제 대국으로 성장했고, 북한은 아직도 가난을 면치 못했다.
