원자력환경공단, 대전지역 중저준위 방폐물 조기 인수 한다

22일 원자력환경공단에 따르면 조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 지난 20일 대전시청을 방문해 이장우대전시장을 면담하고 대전지역 중저준위 방폐물 현안에 대해 의견을 교환했다.

이장우 대전시장은 “현재 원자력연구원과 원자력연료에는 중저준위 방폐물 3만여 드럼이 장기간 보관돼 있다”면서 원자력환경공단이 운영 중인 중저준위 방폐장으로 조기에 옮겨 줄 것을 요청했다.

조성돈이사장은 “2016년부터 대전지역 중저준위방폐물 3,037드럼을 방폐장에서 인수했으나 방폐물 발생기관의 사정으로 인해 3만466드럼을 아직 중저준위 방폐장으로 옮기지 못하고 있다”고 설명했다.

조 이사장은 “방폐물을 보관하고 있는 기관들과 방폐물 포장방식 개선 등 심도있는 협의를 추진, 대전지역 중저준위 방폐물을 방폐장으로 하루속히 옮겨 대전 시민들이 안심할 수 있도록 하겠다”고 약속했다.

한편 대전시를 비롯한 원전 인근지역 23개 지자체는 원자력교부세 신설을 촉구하는 범국민 100만 서면운동을 전개하고 있으며 대전시는 14만5천명 서명을 목표로 하고 있다.

Chairman Cho Seong-don explained, “Since 2016, 3,037 drums of low- and medium-level radioactive waste in Daejeon have been taken over from the radioactive waste disposal facility, but 30,466 drums have yet to be moved to the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility due to the circumstances of the facility that generated the radioactive waste.”

Chairman Cho promised, “We will pursue in-depth discussions with institutions that store radioactive waste, such as improving the packaging method of radioactive waste, and move low- and medium-level radioactive waste in the Daejeon area to a radioactive waste facility as soon as possible so that Daejeon citizens can feel relieved.”

Meanwhile, 23 local governments in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant, including Daejeon City, are developing a pan-citizen 1 million written campaign urging the establishment of a new nuclear power subsidy, and Daejeon City is aiming for 145,000 signatures.
