일본이나 중국에 가서 줄기세포 주사를 혈관에 맞고 있는 사람들이 제법 많다. 왜 우리나라에서 시술하지 않고 외국까지 원정을 가서 할까? 그 이유는 간단하다. 한국의 의료법 때문이다.
외국이나 우리나라에서 시술하는 줄기세포 시술은 골수나 말초혈액, 지방줄기세포를 시술한다.
줄기세포수를 많이 이식하면 할수록 효과가 좋은 것은 당연한 사실이다. 하지만 성체 줄기세포를 추출하는데 그 숫자에는 한계가 있다. 줄기세포 개체수를 늘리는 방법은 배양을 하면 된다. 배양 기술은 그리 어렵지 않다.
하지만 중국이나 일본과 달리 우리나라에서는 줄기세포 배양을 해서 환자에게 이식하는 것은 금지하고 있다. 아직 안전성이 확보되지 않아서다.
성체줄기세포는 자기 몸에서 채취한 것과 타인의 몸에서 얻은 것으로 분류할 수 있다. 자기세포의 경우 면역거부반응 위험성이 없기 때문에 임상시험을 거쳐 안전성과 유효성을 입증하면 되지만, 타인 세포는 신약 개발에 준하는 까다로운 임상시험을 통과해야 한다.
아울러 줄기세포를 채취, 간단한 조작을 거친 후 바로 환자에게 이식하는 경우와 충분한 효과를 얻기 위해 이를 배양하여 증식시킨 다음 주입하는 경우로 나눠볼 수 있다.
국내에서는 전자의 경우 의사의 재량으로 자유롭게 시술할 수 있으나 후자는 세포를 증식시키는 과정에서 각종 바이러스 · 엔도톡신 · 세균 감염, 세포의 유전적 안전성 훼손 등이 우려되기 때문에 우수의약품제조관리기준(GMP)에 준하는 시설을 갖춰야 하며 생산된 세포에 대해 전임상시험을 거쳐야 한다. 이 기준에 따라 성체 줄기세포로 개발된 치료제 4종(골관절염, 급성 심근경색, 크론성 누공, 루게릭병 치료제)이 식품의약품안전처 허가를 받아 실제 환자 치료에 쓰이고 있다.
따라서 현재 우리나라는 병원에서 줄기세포를 배양시켜 시술하는 것은 불법이다. 기술력이 없어서가 아니다. 환자의 부작용과 안전성을 생각해서다. 실제로 미국, 일본이나 중국에 가서 혈관에 줄기세포를 맞은 후에 부작용을 겪는 사람들도 있다.
만병통치약으로 생각하여 그것도 외국에 가서 혈관으로 줄기세포를 맞는다는 것은 효과도 없을 뿐만 아니라 매우 위험한 발상이다. 단순하게 각종 불치병들이 치료될 정도라면 세계의 제약회사들이 각종 줄기세포치료법 개발을 위해 천문학적인 개발 비용을 들여 이 고생을 할 이유가 없다. 제발 현혹되지 말자.
