지역문화활력촉진지원사업의 일환인 본 프로그램은 영해를 중심으로 한 영덕 북부권을 문화예술의 거점으로 부흥시키기 위한 기획에서 출발했다.
워크숍을 위해 영덕을 찾은 아티스트는 미국 켄터키 주 루이빌 출신의 유머 넘치는 현대미술가 브래드 다우니(Brad Downey) 그리고 독일 베를린 출신으로 칠레에 거주하는 공공예술가 얀 보만(JanVormann) 이다.
지난달 25일 영덕 각지에서 모인 어린이와 성인 40여 명이 참여한 브래드 다우니 워크숍에선 블라인드 컨투어 드로잉(종이를 보지 않고 그리는 드로잉)을 진행, 그림은 잘 그려야 한다는 강박을 없애고 대상에 집중하여 자유롭게 표현하는 흥미로운 실험을 했다.
마주 서서 보지 않고 그리기, 긴 장대에 펜을 달아서 그리기 등 전혀 새로운 방식으로 내면의 장애를 없애고 드로잉의 한계를 파괴하는 새로운 경험을 시도했다.
다음날 26일에 열린 얀 보만 작가의 워크숍에선 아티스트와 주민들이 옛 영해 읍성(서성벽)의 돌 틈 빈 공간에 알록달록한 레고를 조립해서 끼워 넣으며 오래된 성벽에 새 숨을 불어넣었다.
무더위 속에서도 놀라운 집중력을 발휘한 참가자들은“친절한 해외작가들과 함께 했던 시간이 정말 재미있었고 기회가 있다면 다시 참여하고 싶다”며 즐거움을 감추지 않았다.
뜨거운 여름,‘만세아트페스타 아티스트 워크숍’을 진행한 브래드 다우니, 얀 보만 작가는 아쉬움 속에 떠났지만 영덕에서 행복했던 기억을 작품으로 제작, 만세시장 곳곳에 숨겨놓았다.
얀 보만 작가는 워크숍에서 영덕의 어린이들이 조립한 레고 작품을 모아 만세시장의 깨진 기둥을 메꾸고 영구 보관이 가능한 작품으로 새롭게 탄생시켰다.
브래드 다우니 작가는 자신의 코를 청동으로 떠낸‘Nasenzwicker’작품을 시장 벽에 설치했고, 영해 만세시장 무대 벽면에 작가의 대표 캐릭터를 도입,‘was here’연작의 사인도 남겼다. 특히 그는 1970년대 스텐실 기법을 최초로 시도한 1세대 공공미술 아티스트 존 페크너의 오리지널 스텐실 원판을 해외 전시차 소장하고 있다가 영해 만세시장 한 벽면에 새겼다. <JAN 1971>. 관객이 1971년 1월 당시를 각기 다른 기억으로 떠올릴 수 있도록 하는 작품이다.

Yeonghae Manse Market Street Art Festa ‘Artist Workshop’ successfully completed

Artist Brad Downey installed ‘Nasenzwicker’, a bronze sculpture of his own nose, on the wall of the market, introduced the artist’s representative characters to the stage wall of Yeonghae Manse Market, and left his signature for the ‘was here’ series.
