미국의 보스턴 글로브라는 일간 신문은, 미국 내에서 발행되는 일간신문 가운데 상위 매체 중의 하나이다. 신부들 성추행 사건의 시작은 지난 2001년 여름. 이 신문사에 마티 바론이 신임 편집국으로 임명됐다. 이때 가톨릭 보스턴 교구 사제들의 아동 성추행 내용이 제보됐다.
마티 바론 편집국장은 이 신문 내의 '스포트라이트’ 팀에 취재를 지시했고, 취재 한 이후 기사화됐다. 30년에 걸쳐 수십 명의 아동을 성추행 한 혐의로 기소된 지역교구의 신부들의 행태가 폭로됐다. 신부들에게 피해당한 이들의 생생한 고통이 드러났다. 이 보도에 따라 2003년 9월 미국 가톨릭 보스턴 대교구는 성직자 성추행 피해자들에게 8,500만 달러를 배상하게 된다. 이런 스토리가 '스포트라이트'라는 영화 속에 담겨 있다.
필자는 지난 2016년에 개봉된 영화 '스포트라이트'를 감상했었다. 필자는 주간신문 편집국장을 오래한 연유라서, 신문사에서 편집국장의 역할이 무언지를 재음미 하는 차원에서 이 영화를 여러 번 보았다.
기자로서 비리를 취재-폭로하는 것은 기자가 마땅히 해야할 일이라고 생각한다.
그런데 그 반대(反對)의 일도 있다. 언론이 사실을 왜곡-보도하는 경우라고 생각한다. 최근 대한민국에서 그런 일이 발생, 재판 중이다. 기독교복음선교회(일명 JMS) 정명석 목사의 성폭행(準强姦) 사건이다.
필자는 본지(브레이크뉴스) 지난 4월22일에 게재한 “JMS 정명석 목사와 관련된 과장-허황된 보도내용의 실체...“진실은 따로 있다?”라는 제목의 글에서, 언론이 지닌 과장보도 문제를 처음으로 짚었다.
이 글에서 “최근 기독교복음선교회 정명석 목사(총재)에 관한 일탈(逸脫) 기사가 보도 되었고, 이에 대한 반론 기사들도 연이어 제작-보도 되고 있다. 특히 성직자인 JMS 정명석 목사의 이성(異姓)접촉에 대해 '과연 사실일까? 조작된 것일까?'라는 의혹이, 따라 붙는다. 우선 성적인 비리를 저질렀다는, 이성 접촉의 숫자 문제이다. 그간 몇 언론사들의 JMS 정명석 목사 관련 보도문에는 '1만 명 이상이 성폭행을 당했다'고 주장되어지고 있다. '1만 명 이상이 성폭행을 당했다'는 주장은 이미 전 세계 언론들이 보도, 사실인 것처럼 인지, 보도해온 사안“이라면서 ”그런데 언론의 논쟁(論爭) 보도 기사 중에는 보도문에 적시(摘示)돼 있는 내용이 모두 사실(事實)이냐, 또는 그 보도문이 진실(眞實)이냐는 의혹이 항상 따라 붙게 돼 있다. 기사를 제보한 측의 주장 속에는 사실이 증명되지 않는, 거친 주장도 게재-내재되기 때문이다. 그래서 기사 속의 사실이 모두 진실이지 않다는 결론에 다다른다. JMS 정명석 목사 관련 보도도 모두 사실처럼 오인(誤認)되지만, 100% 진실이 아닌 내용도 엿보인다. JMS 정명석 목사에 의해 '1만 명 이상이 성폭행을 당했다'는 부분은 진실이 아닌 허위일 가능성이 높다. 기사로 작성되는 과정에서 사실이 밝혀지지 않은 내용을 한 개인의 주장(主張)으로 포장해서 보도했기 때문이다. 필자는 이 문제에 대해 상식적으로 생각, 개인 의견을 공론화해 본다. JMS 정명석 목사 관련보도도 모두 사실처럼 포장되어 있지만, 그게 진실이 아니다. JMS 정명석 목사에 의해 '1만 명 이상이 성폭행을 당했다'는 어구는, 'JMS 정명석 목사가 1만 명 이상을 성폭행 했다'는 말과 상통한다. 그러나 이 부분은 사실처럼 보이나 100% 진실이 아니라는 게 바로 '진실된 사실'이다“고 썼었다.

여기에 그치지 않고, 그 후로도 이 사건과 관련, 지속적으로 언론의 과장 보도 문제들을 지적해왔다.
지난 4월 26일자 기독교복음선교회가 발표한 성명서에도 이 문제가 지적됐다. 이 성명서에서는 OTT(Over-the-top)회사인 넷플릭스에 요구하는 사항이 적시돼 있다. 인용한다.
“본 선교회는 넷플릭스‘나는 신이다’의 제작진과 그것을 상업적으로 사용한 플랫폼 측에 다음을 요구합니다. ▲핵심 증인 M이 녹취했다는 파일의 진위를 가릴 수 있는 원본을 제시해주시기 바랍니다. 그렇지 않으면 너무나 간단한 조작만으로 한 단체와 개인을 사지에 몰아넣고 전 국민을 기만했다는 의혹을 받을 것입니다. ▲일명 홍콩 모기장 영상은 현장에서 일어난 실제 사실과 상이하게 편집되었습니다. 아무런 위법적 요소가 없었던 상황을 마치 성범죄가 일어난 것처럼 보이게 편집한 것입니다. 이 영상의 원본도 제시하십시오. ▲엄연한 인격권을 가진 당사자의 나체 영상을 아무런 처리 없이 유포한 것은 해당 여성들을 공개 살해한 것과 마찬가지의 범죄 행위이며 결코 정의를 위한 것이 될 수 없습니다. 그 영상은 성범죄와 관련이 없으며 선정성과 상업성만을 위해 손쉽게 타인의 인격을 말살한 증거가 될 것입니다. ▲넷플릭스의‘나는 신이다’는 대역배우의 재연조차 표시하지 않아 의도적으로 혼동을 일으키는 무책임한 페이크 다큐멘터리입니다. 또한 선교회를 범죄단체로 규정하고 여론을 이용해 무너뜨릴 목적으로 사실관계와 맥락을 조작한 막장드라마입니다.”
이 성명서에는 기독교복음선교회가 언론에 요구하는 내용도 담겨 있다. 인용한다.
“▲현재 관련 재판이 면밀하게 진행되고 있습니다. 그러므로 헌법 제27조에 의거 공정한 재판을 받을 기본 권리를 침해할 소지가 있는 여론몰이를 멈추시기 바랍니다. ▲언론사가 선교회 측에 반론의 기회를 주었다고 주장하지만 대부분 선정적인 보도를 위한 함정 취재였으며 말한 이의 의도와 다른 편집으로 언론사가 원하는 그림과 소스를 얻어내기 위한 비윤리적 이윤 추구 행위였습니다. ▲이 시대에 언론을 통해 일어나는 일이라고 믿기지 않는 무차별적 회원 신상 공개, 선교회 관련 업체의 식별과 색출, 그로 인해 물질적·정신적 피해가 일어나도록 방조한 점, 심지어 예술작품까지 훼손되게 만드는 ‘증오범죄’에 앞장서는 일을 부디 멈추십시오. ▲위와 같이 명백히 위법이 되는 모든 기사와 방송을 포털과 SNS, 영상 플랫폼에서 삭제해 주시기 바랍니다. ▲사회적으로 사안이 중차대한 만큼 선교회 측에게도 사실관계 확인 및 소명의 기회를 공평하게 부여해 주시기 바랍니다.”
영화 '스트라이트’는 미국 보스톤 지역 가톨릭 신부들의 성추행을 고발-폭로하는 게 주 스토리이다. 그런데 대한민국에서 벌어진 기독교복음선교회(일명 JMS) 정명석 목사의 성폭행(準强姦) 사건은 영화 스포트라이트와는 대척점(對蹠點)에 서 있다. 그 반대이기 때문이다.
거대 언론들이 한 종교인의 성추행 문제를, 뻥트기식-과장 보도를 한 내용이다. 일부 언론들은 '1만 명 이상이 성폭행을 당했다'고 보도했다. 한 남자(정명석)가 1만명의 여성을 성폭행했다는 류(類)의 보도는 절대로, 절대로...사실일 수 없다. moonilsuk@naver.com

In this article (Break News) published on April 22nd, titled “Exaggeration related to Pastor Jung Myeong-seok of JMS – the reality of false reports…“There is no truth?”, the problem of exaggerated reporting in the media pointed out for the first time.

I think about this issue with common sense and try to publicize my personal opinion. Reports related to JMS Pastor Myeong-seok Jung are all packaged as facts, but that is not the truth. The phrase, 'More than 10,000 people were sexually assaulted by Pastor Jung Myeong-seok of JMS' is in line with the saying, "JMS Pastor Myung-Seok Chung raped more than 10,000 people." However, this part seems to be true, but it is not 100% true, that is the 'true fact'.”
It did not stop here, and since then, it has continuously pointed out the problem of exaggerated reports in the media in relation to this case.
This issue was also pointed out in a statement released by the Christian Gospel Mission on April 26. In this statement, the demands of Netflix, an over-the-top (OTT) company, are specified. quote
“This Mission seeks the following from the production team of Netflix’s ‘I Am God’ and the platform that used it commercially. ▲Please present the original document that can verify the authenticity of the file that key witness M recorded. Otherwise, you will be accused of driving groups and individuals to the limb and deceiving entire people with too simple manipulations. ▲The so-called Hong Kong mosquito net video was edited differently from the actual fact that occurred on the spot. The situation where there was no illegal element was edited to look as if a sex crime had occurred. Please also present the original version of this video. ▲Distributing nude images of a person who has clear personality rights without any processing is a criminal act equivalent to publicly killing the women in question and can never be done for justice. The video has nothing to do with sex crimes and will serve as evidence of the easy destruction of another person's personality just for sensationalism and commerciality. ▲Netflix's 'I Am God' is an irresponsible fake documentary that deliberately causes confusion by not even displaying the reenactment of double actors. It is also a drama that manipulates the facts and context for the purpose of defining the missionary society as a criminal organization and using public opinion to destroy it.”
The statement also contains the demands of the Christian Gospel Mission to the media. quote
“▲Currently, the related trial is proceeding closely. Therefore, please stop the public opinion gathering that may violate the basic right to a fair trial pursuant to Article 27 of the Constitution. ▲The press claims to have given the Missionary Society a chance to object, but most of it was a trap for sensational reporting, and it was an unethical profit-seeking act to obtain the pictures and sources the press wanted by editing different from the intention of the speaker. ▲Indiscriminate disclosure of member identities, which cannot be believed to be happening through the media in this era, identification and search of companies related to missionary organizations, aiding and abetting material and psychological damage, and even 'hate crimes' that damage works of art Please stop taking the lead. . ▲ Please delete all articles and broadcasts that are clearly illegal as above from portals, social media, and video platforms. ▲Since the matter is socially significant, please give the missionary team an equal opportunity to confirm the facts and call on them.”
The main story of the movie 'Street' is to accuse and expose the sexual harassment of Catholic priests in Boston, USA. However, the sexual assault case of Pastor Myung-seok Jung of the Christian Gospel Mission (aka JMS) in South Korea stands at the opposite point from the movie spotlight. Because the opposite is true.
