총 사업비는 8억 5000만원이 투입되는 이번 사업은 녹지 단절구간에 수목을 식재해 도심 속 녹색공간을 늘리고 도로변 소음·분진을 줄이기 위한 완충녹지를 조성하기 위해 마련됐다.
이곳은 컨테이너와 건축 자재들을 보관하는 임시 야적장으로 사용됐던 탓에 환경오염은 물론 도심 경관을 해쳐 각종 민원이 끊이지 않았다.
이에 경주시는 이 일대 경관 개선과 완충녹지 조성을 위해 2020년 1월 실시계획인가를 고시하고, 이듬해인 2021년 3월부터 토지보상협의에 나서며 본격적인 녹색공간 조성 사업에 착수했다.
이후 올해 2월 토지보상 및 지장물 보상을 모두 마무리 짓고 문화재 시굴조사를 거쳐 발굴조사가 진행 중이다.
경주시는 발굴조사가 마무리되는 이달 중 업체를 선정하고 오는 12월 완공을 목표로 다음달 내 경관 개선 사업 착공에 나설 계획이다.
사업이 마무리되면 이곳은 벚나무와 소나무 등 교목 430그루와 철쭉과 조팝나무 등 화관목 5000그루 등 아름드리 수목으로 뒤덮인 녹지 공간이 될 전망이다.
이밖에도 부가시설로 녹지 내 200m의 산책로와 벤치 등 휴게시설도 설치해 이곳을 찾는 시민들의 이용률을 보다 높일 계획이다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “이번 사업을 통해 도로 주변 미세먼지 감소 효과와 더불어 시민들에게 쾌적한 녹색환경을 제공할 것으로 기대하고 있다”며 “경주시는 앞으로도 지속적인 완충녹지 조성 사업을 통해 아름다운 경주 만들기에 더욱 더 박차를 가하겠다”고 밝혔다.
