10일 군에 따르면 영덕 동애고택은 건립 시기가 1864년으로 명확하고 그 후의 변화 양상도 비교적 잘 파악되는 고택으로, 조선시대 경북 동북부 지역의 전통적 생활양식의 변화상을 보여주는 주거문화 공간으로서의 문화재적 가치를 인정받고 있다.
참고로 동애(東涯) 이병호는 구한말 유림으로 1896년 영해의진의 의병 활동에 참여해 일제에 항거했으며, 이후 계몽운동에 몸담는 등 영덕군의 근대기 주요 위인이다.
동애고택의 건축적 특징을 보면 영덕지역을 비롯한 경북 동북부 지역 민가의 기본적인 배치 ‘안채+아래채 ㄱ자형’와 평면 ‘안채-8, 10, 12칸 겹집, 정지 내 곳간, 아래채-아랫방+마구’ 등의 특성을 보여주고 있다.
특히 안채는 전반적으로 건립 당시의 원형이 잘 남아 있어 전통적 생활양식을 파악할 수 있는 문화재적 가치가 높다.
김광열 영덕군수는 “지역의 전통문화재로 그 가치 높은 고건축물인 영덕 동애고택이 경상북도 민속문화재로 지정돼 보존과 연계 사업에 한층 탄력이 붙었다”고 평가하며, “기존 문화재에 대한 보존과 관리에 철저함을 기하고 숨어있는 지역 문화유산을 추가 발굴해 영덕군의 전통문화를 드높이겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편, 최근 영덕군은 지역의 보존 가치가 높은 문화유산에 대한 문화재 지정 및 등록을 꾸준히 추진해 2019년 ‘영덕 영해장터거리 근대역사문화공간’, 2021년 ‘영덕 괴시마을’이 국가민속문화재로 등록됐고, 같은 해 ‘영덕 장육사 대웅전 벽화’가 경상북도 유형문화재로 지정된 바 있다.
또한, 지난해엔 ‘영덕 옥계 침수정 일원’과 ‘영덕 무안박씨 희암재사’가 국가지정문화재 중 명승과 국가민속문화재로 지정됐으며, 올해에는 ‘영덕 토염’이 경상북도 무형문화재로 지정된 바 있다.
이 밖에도 지역 내 유수의 문화유산이 국가문화재나 경상북도문화재로 지정·등록될 것으로 기대되고 있어 영덕군의 역사·문화 자원에 관한 세간의 관심이 더욱 높아질 것으로 기대된다.
