브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 조 바이든 미국 대통령이 가자지구를 통치하고 있는 무장정파 하마스와 전쟁을 벌이고 있는 이스라엘에 대해 첫 우려의 목소리를 냈다.
바이든 대통령은 15일(현지시간) CBS방송과의 인터뷰에서 "이스라엘의 가자지구 점령은 큰 실수가 될 것"이라고 경고했다고 이 매체는 보도했다.
바이든 대통령은 '이스라엘이 하마스를 완전히 제거해야 한다는데 동의하느냐'는 질문에 "동의한다. 이스라엘은 하마스에 대응해야 한다"면서도 "다만 팔레스타인이 한 국가로 가는 길이 있어야 한다. 하마스가 모든 팔레스타인을 대표하지 않는다. 팔레스타인 자치정부가 있어야 한다"고 강조했다.
이어 하마스에 대해 "겁쟁이들"이라고 평가하며 "그들은 민간인 뒤에 숨어있다. 민간인이 있는 곳에 본부를 두고 건물을 배치했다"고 비판했다.
아울러 이스라엘에 대해서도 "'전쟁의 규칙'에 따라 행동할 것이라고 확신한다"면서 "가자지구의 무고한 사람들이 의약품과 식량, 식수에 접근할 수 있게 될 것이라 확신한다"고 말했다.
한편, 뉴욕타임스는 이날 바이든 대통령의 인터뷰 내용에 대해 "동맹인 이스라엘을 제지하기 위한 첫 번째 공식 행보"라고 분석했다.
앞서 유엔 등 국제사회는 이스라엘이 수도, 전기 등을 모두 끊고 민간인들이 도망칠 퇴로도 열어놓지 않은 상황에서 가자지구에 대한 공습을 지속하는데 대해 "인도주의적이지 않다"며 지속적으로 우려를 표명했다.
하지만 미국은 그간 이스라엘 보복 공격의 당위성만 설명할 뿐, 비판 목소리를 내놓진 않았다.
