브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 미군 2000여명이 이스라엘에 파병될 가능성이 있다는 외신 보도가 나왔다.
16일(현지시간) 월스트리트저널(WSJ)과 CNN 등은 미 국방부 고위 소식통의 말을 인용해 미군이 이스라엘 지원을 위해 약 2000여명의 미군을 사전 선발하고 있다고 전했다.
다만 이들 병력은 전투병력은 아니며 군사 자문과 의료 등 이스라엘군을 지원하는 임무를 하게 될 것이라고 덧붙였다.
이들 매체는 병력 배치를 위한 사전 준비가 확실히 배치된다는 뜻은 아니지만 만약 확정될 경우에는 이동을 위한 준비 시간이 크게 단축될 것이라고 분석했다.
아울러 만약 이 부대가 이스라엘에 배치된다면 어느 지역으로 갈지에 대해서도 확실히 정해진 바는 없다고 했다.
파병 목적에 대해선, 미군의 개입은 이스라엘과 하마스 간의 충돌이 이란, 레바논의 헤즈볼라 등까지 참전하며 중동 전쟁으로 확전된는 것을 막기 위한 성격이 강하다고 해석했다.
그러나 사브리나 싱 미 국방부 부대변인은 이날 미 해병의 이스라엘 파병 가능성에 대한 질문을 받고선 "현재로선 제공할 수 있는 정보가 없다"고 즉답을 피했다.
