장영주 작가는 최근 '순신, 누구를 위한 목숨인가'라는 저서를 펴냈다. 출판사측은 “이 책은 조선시대 유명한 전쟁에 관한 역사서라고도 할 수 없고, 알려진 인물 중심의 위인전은 더욱 아니다. 오로지 초인적인 한 인간이 겪은 전쟁을 통해 지난 과거를 배워 미래 위기를 준비해야 할 국가생존에 필요한 통렬한 지침서”라고 피력했다. 본지는 이 책을 출간한 장영주 작가와 서면 인터뷰를 가졌으며, 이 서면 인터뷰는 출판사의 협력으로 이뤄졌다.(편집자 주)
-작가님에게 이순신 장군은 어떤 의미입니까?
▲학자들은 우리를 지금, 여기에 있게 한 역사적인 인물이 세분이 계시다고들 합니다. 세종대왕, 이순신 장군, 박정희 대통령이라고들 하지요. 세종대왕께서는 어리석은 백성들을 위하여 한글을 지으셔서 깨우쳐주셨습니다. 지금 지구촌을 휩쓰는 한류는 감각과 감성을 넘어 지식과 문화를 전달하는 힘이 있는데 그 힘의 원천이 바로 한글이지요. 충무공 이순신 장군께서는 나라를 구한다는 일심으로 자신의 현실이 어찌 되었던 끝까지 목숨을 다하여 진력하셨습니다. 사령관에서 계급장은 떨어지고 졸지에 죄수가 되어 고문을 받으셨지요.
흰옷 입고 떠난 귀양길에 어머님께서는 아들을 만나기 직전에 돌아가셨지요. 초로의 아들은 땅에 뒹굴고 몸부림치면서 울었다고 적습니다. 막내아들이 적군의 칼에 무참하게 살해되었어도 부하들 앞이라 울어주지도 못합니다. 단지 ‘하늘이 어찌 이다지도 인자하지 못하신가?’ 라며 피눈물을 가슴으로 삼키십니다. 자신의 피를 먹여 키웠다고도 할 수 있는 상승무패의 조선수군이 칠천량에서 몽땅 수몰되었어도, 늙고 지친 몸과 마음으로 찬 바다 위 흔들리는 뱃전에서 코피를 한 되나 쏟았어도, 수군을 패하라는 임금의 억지에도 결코 꺾이지 않으십니다. 결국 일본을 패주 시키고 그 자리에서 전사하셨습니다.

▲아주 많지요. 이순신 장군의 개인적인 성격으로부터 전쟁에 임하는 자세 등 모든 것에 신비할 정도로 경계를 넘나드는 품성이 있으십니다. 자신의 목숨조차 전혀 아끼지 않는 냉혹한 지휘관의 모습과 달빛과 피리소리에 애간장이 탄다고 처연하게 읊조리는 모습이 겹쳐집니다.
사무친 부모님 생각에 눈물이 흘러내리는 것조차 모를 효심과 우정에 겨워 술에 흠뻑 취하는 정에 약한 모습도 자주 노출 되고 있습니다. 또 노심초사에 뱃전에 자주 웅크리고 앉아 있었다고 하셨습니다. 어느 날은 아침상을 받아 놓고 마시기 시작한 술에 종일 너무 취하십니다. 이튿날 부하들 보기 민망하여 동헌으로 출근도 못했다고 고백합니다. 찰나에 목숨을 잃는 전장에서 칼과 활을 쥔 지휘관의 모습만이 아니라 감수성 예민한 시인의 모습이 자주 나타납니다.
지금 한산도의 통영은 그림, 시, 음악가들이 많이 배출되는 예향으로 유명합니다. 무엇보다 생, 사, 문, 무의 경계를 넘나드는 장군의 인격의 핵심 얼개인 철학을 알고 싶었습니다. 그의 철학에서 그의 병학이 나왔지만 그 철학은 이순신 장군이 홀로 터득한 것만은 분명 아니었을 겁니다. 목숨과 나라의 명운이 걸린 전쟁터에서 장군이 계신다면 비록 화살과 대포가 쏟아져 내린다 해도 수많은 백성들이 따라다녔다는 것은 어떤 감화력이었을까? 오랫동안 그분의 마음을 살피다 보니 가깝게는 장군가문의 선조들과 멀게는 한민족의 어른들의 철학에서 핏줄로 이어져 온 것임을 알게 되었습니다. 이 책은 그런 장군의 철학적 정신세계를 찾아가는 여정이지만 장군의 시대에 머물지만은 않습니다. 영원히 살아 있는 그 힘을 미래에 투사하고자 하는 염원이 이 책에 일심이 되어 내재되어 있습니다.

-향후 계획이 있으시다면?
▲저는 화가이기도 합니다. 더 늦기 전에 장군께서 생전에 머물고, 지나가고, 느끼고, 생각하시던 목숨 길들을 따라서 현대의 민초로써 풍경화와 기행문, 영상을 만들어 보고 싶습니다. 이제는 혼자가 아닌 뜻 맞는 동지들과 함께 길을 떠날 겁니다. 그 길은 함께 해야만 더욱 의미 깊고 아름다울 것이기 때문이죠. 그 길은 끝내는 압수와 두만을 넘을 겁니다. 아무르의 만주를 넘고 요하를 건너 몽골과 바이칼로 이어지는 그 길은 ‘한탱그리 아리랑 로드’가 될 것입니다. 결국 모든 대한국인들이 걸어갈 길입니다.

▲이제는 어깨를 펴고 눈을 들어 한반도에 머물지 말고 지구 전체를 보아야 합니다. 그것이 이순신 장군께서 명을 이으셨고 박정희 대통령께서 부국강병의 터를 닦으셨고 세종께서 한글로 우리 뇌의 지력을 개발시켜 주신 이유입니다. 세분과 더불어 꺾이지 않는 마음으로 모든 역경을 이겨냈던 우리 민초들의 역사 또한 존경합니다. 그 역사의 힘으로 지구 위의 모든 생명들과 조화롭게 존재하는 접화군생의 문화가 떨쳐 일어나야 합니다.
