나는 영일만 근처의 구룡포 중학교-포항 고등학교를 졸업한 사람이다. 평생 구룡포 하정리 바닷가에서 어장을 하셨던 어부의 아들이며 내 부모가 잠들어계신 곳이다.
1985년도 서울신문(스포츠서울) 방송담당 기자로 채용되어 KBS MBC를 휘젓고 다닐 무렵, 나는 당시 KBS에서 안인기PD(고 안성기 배우 친형)가 연출을 맡았던 ‘전국노래자랑’을 송해 선생과 안PD를 설득해 구룡포 해동 선구점(지금의 구룡포 수협 맞은편)앞에서 열도록 했다. 당시 녹화를 위해 현장 헌팅을 나갔던 제작팀은 구룡포-상정 구간 협소한 터널(고디굴) 때문에 방송장비가 들어갈 수 없어 감포로 돌아 구룡포로 들어가는 헤프닝을 벌이기도 했다.
구룡포는 또 내 친형 전성규 시인이 국내 최고 독자를 가졌던 ‘주부생활’ ‘엘레강스’의 기자로 있을 당시(1984년) 종합여성지 처음으로 구룡포를 대서특필 소개했을 만큼 내 형님과 나에게는 각별한 애정의 고향이기도 했다.
수십 년이 흐른 지금, 7순을 바라보는 이즈음에 다시금 포항 구룡포를 돌아보며 만감에 젖어본다. 중-고등학교를 다닐 때, 구룡포에서 포항으로 진입하는 대송면 동촌 일대 바닷가 송림숲을 뒤집으며 건설되고 있던 포항제철소 건설현장을 지켜보며 성장했고 그 자리에 대한민국 근대화의 초석을 단단히 놓은 박정희 대통령과 박태준 포스코 회장의 신화가 내게는 든든한 자부심으로 가슴속에 벼슬처럼 남아 있었다.
이윽고 최백호의 ‘영일만 친구’가 희망의 상징처럼 탄생하면서 포항 사람들 정서를 하나로 모으게 했고 트로트계의 신동처럼 등장한 포항의 딸 전유진이 포항 이미지를 한껏 업그레이드시키면서 내 속에는 벼슬이 하나 더 생긴 기분이 됐었다.
지금, 나라의 근간이 흔들리는 경험 못한 샛바람이 연일 수상쩍게 불어재키고 있는데 50일도 채 남지 않은 지방선거를 앞두고 포항이 들끓고 있다. 수십 번 국가적 선거를 치렀지만 이런 지저분한 포항지역 선거 분위기는 처음이다. 일찌감치 시장 선거에 도전장을 던진 인사들이 이래저래 10여명 나섰던 것은 충분히 이해가 간다. 3선 시장으로 물러나는 이강덕 시장 후임을 ‘자천’으로 나섰을 것이다.
그런데, 참 황당한 일이 벌어졌다. 포항사람들을 대상으로 몇 달간 진행해온 시장 적합도 여론조사에서 상위 1, 2, 3위를 하던 예비후보 전원을 모조리 컷오프 시키고 최하위 예비후보 4명을 핀셋으로 뽑듯 통과시켜 대결을 붙인 것이다. 가관인 것은이들 하위 4명 중 2명은 포항의 현직 국회의원이 밀고 있다는 얘기가 진즉 설득력 있게 회자됐다. 결국 이들 4명 중 한 명이 최종 국민의힘 후보로 선출됐는데 이 사람의 전력을 두고 뒷말이 무성하다. 가족을 동원한 수십억 원의 공금횡령 사건으로 검찰 수사가 진행 중에 있고 얼마전 코로나 당시 가족회사를 통해 마스크 독점 사업으로 수십억 원의 이익을 챙겼다는 소문에서부터 힌남노 태풍 때는 도의원 신분으로 긴급 복구 소모품 판매로 100억 대의 매출을 올렸다는 소문까지 포항시민들 사이로 급격히 파고 돈다.
문제는, 이런 사람을 힘이 있는 정치인이 적극 밀고 있다는 소문인데, 그 저간에는 자신의 선출직 정치인 출마 때 선대위에서 적극 활동했던 정치인 출신이었다는 사실과, 포항의 실세 정치인들이 중앙당 공관위 등에 ‘누구누구는 절대 안 된다’는, 지역 민심과는 동떨어진 소문을 전파하고 있다고 알려지면서 이번 포항 지방선거는 폭풍전야 같은 소용돌이가 감지되고 있다는 얘기다.
이런 상황이 이어지자, 여론조사 상위 랭커 몇 명을 묶어 무소속 연대를 만들자는 제안을 시민들 사이에서 상정하고 있으며 포항시장을 두 번이나 했던 한 인사는 무소속 출마를 기정사실화 하면서 혼란이 가중되고 있는 가운데 그 틈새를 비집고 민주당 후보가 발 빠르게 채비를 서둔다는 얘기도 나돈다.
한때, 정치 패널로 중앙 언론을 통해 이런 폐해를 누구보다 아프게 지적했던 당사자가 정작 자신은 지역 국회의원으로서 포항의 요상스런 후보를 지원하며 뒷배가 되고 있다는 얘기는 아이러니를 넘어 참담하다. 사실이 아니기를 바라지만 이런 정도로 처절하게 망가져가는 포항 정가의 풍경을 지켜보노라니 ‘고향 포항’이라는 내 속의 벼슬들이 허무하게 지는 벚꽃보다 더 참담해서 슬프다. 이번에도 과연, 공천 받은 과메기는 무조건 당선될까? rochest325@hanmail.net

In 1985, when I was hired as a broadcast reporter for Seoul Shinmun (Sports Seoul) and was making waves at KBS and MBC, I persuaded Mr. Song Hae and PD Ahn In-gi (the older brother of the late actor Ahn Sung-ki), who was directing the show at KBS at the time, to hold the "National Singing Contest" in front of the Haedong Fishing Gear Store in Guryongpo (currently across from the Guryongpo Fisheries Cooperative). At the time, the production team, who had gone out for location scouting for filming, even experienced a minor incident where they had to detour via Gampo to enter Guryongpo because the narrow tunnel (Godigul) between Guryongpo and Sangjeong prevented their broadcasting equipment from entering.

Although I hope this is not true, watching the landscape of Pohang’s political scene crumble so miserably saddens me, as the titles of "Hometown Pohang" within me feel more wretched than cherry blossoms falling in vain. Will the nominated candidate, the "Gwamegi," be elected unconditionally this time as well?
