고무줄 잣대, 엿장수의 엿판, 솥단지와 숟가락. 지금 한국 보수의 모습이다. 한동훈 부산 북갑 출마를 놓고, 국힘 지도부는 ‘원칙’을 들먹이는 중이다. 참 기가차서 말이 안나온다.
한동훈이 출마하는 부산 북갑에 ‘원칙’데로 국힘 후보를 공천해야 한다고 주장한다. 그리고 그게 ‘원칙’이라고 말한다. 이게 얼마나 황당한 발상일까? 짧게 말하면, 소수의 병력을 갖고 많은 수의 적을 상대로 ‘대회전’을 벌이자는 격이다. 어이가 있고 없고를 떠나 기본적으로 전략 마인드가 없다는 게 더 큰 문제다.
그나마 그 원칙이 ‘고무줄 잣대’다. 늘어닜다 줄어들었다가. 기준은 고정되어 있지 않고, 상황과 이해관계에 따라 매우 유연하게 변형된다. 그건 원칙이 아니라 ‘해석의 기술’ 또는 ‘자기합리화’의 도구일 뿐이다. 참으로 염치없는 ‘원칙’이다.
요즘 부산 북갑을 둘러싼 논쟁을 보면, 그 고무줄 잣대가 얼마나 탄력적인지 새삼 감탄하게 된다. “공천이 원칙”이라 외치는 이들은 스스로 답해야 한다. 증거없이 한동훈 제명, 김종혁, 배현진 징계 때 그 원칙은 어디에 있었나.
박민영의 혐오발언을 하고도 경고만 하고 재신임을 할 때 그 원칙은 어디에 있었나? 이정현이 이 지역 저 지역에서 특정 후보들을 컷오프 하고, 경선판이 흡사 시골 장터 ‘엿장수의 엿판’으로 변질될 때 그 원칙은 어디에 있었나? ‘원칙’을 말하기조차 민망스러울 뿐이다.
본래 엿을 얼마나 떼어주느냐는 엿장수 마음이다. 공천도 마찬가지다. 누구에겐 두툼하게, 누구에겐 얇게, 누구에겐 아예 안 주기도 한다. 중요한 건 기준이 아니라 엿판을 든 엿장수의 감정 상태다. 그래서 엿장수 맘대로라고 하는 것이다.
그렇다면 지금 부산 북갑에서 벌어지는 이 소란은 무엇인가. 간단히 정리하면 ‘솥단지와 숟가락’이다. 추악한 이익 다툼이라는 것이다. 황당한 건, 이미 한국 보수는 말라 비틀어지고 있다. 지방선거가 문제가 아니다. 보수는 싸가지가 없는 걸 남아 싹수가 노랗다. 미래가 없다는 뜻이다.
판 자체가 기울어진 마당에도 보수를 자처하는 사람들은 여전히 ‘누가 공천을 받느냐’에 집착한다. 그래서 ‘솥단지와 숟가락’인 것이다. 솥단지에 금이 가고, 밥도 될까말까 하는데 숟가락부터 들고 설치며 밥뜨는 순서를 정하는 격이다.
이러한 한국 보수의 자화상이 참 민망하고 황당할 뿐이다. 한동훈이 말한 ‘보수 재건 동남풍’은 때가 되면 불어오는 자연풍이 아니다. 기득권을 내려놓고 정치 대개혁이란 대명제에 시민들이 호응할 때 비로소 불 수 있는 바람인 것이다. 지금 사람들은 한동훈에게서 한줄기 바람을 기대하고 있다.
지금처럼 고무줄 잣대로 엿판을 나누고, 금간 솥단지 앞에서 숟가락들고 다툼을 벌이면 그 결과는 뻔하다. 엿은 녹고, 밥은 타고 판은 끝난다.
부산 북갑 무공천.
썩어빠진 한국 정치의 고물줄 잣대, 엿판 같은 정치판, 솥단지와 숟가락으로 좌우를 넘어 여야를 망라하는, 소심줄 처럼 질기디 질긴 그 ‘끼리끼리’ 네트워크를 완전 끝장내기 위한 고육책인 것이다.

"Rude" Korean Conservatives? Are They Even Rude?

A rubber band yardstick, a candy vendor's tray, a cauldron and a spoon. This is the current state of Korean conservatism. Regarding Han Dong-hoon's candidacy in Busan Buk-gap, the People Power Party leadership is citing "principles." It is so absurd that I am speechless.
They argue that the People Power Party must nominate a candidate in Busan Buk-gap, where Han Dong-hoon is running, in accordance with "principles." And they claim that this is the "principle." How preposterous is this idea? To put it simply, it is akin to suggesting a "great battle" against a large number of enemies with a small force. Leaving aside whether it is absurd or not, the bigger problem is that they fundamentally lack a strategic mindset.
At the very least, that "principle" is a "rubber band yardstick." It stretches and shrinks. Standards are not fixed; they are modified very flexibly depending on the situation and interests. That is not a principle, but merely a tool for the "art of interpretation" or "self-rationalization." It is a truly shameless "principle."
Looking at the recent controversy surrounding Busan Buk-gap, one is struck anew by just how flexible that rubber band standard is. Those who shout that "nominations are a principle" must answer for themselves. Where were those principles when Han Dong-hoon was expelled without evidence, and when Kim Jong-hyuk and Bae Hyun-jin were disciplined?
Where were those principles when Park Min-young was given a mere warning and re-confirmed despite her hateful remarks? Where were those principles when Lee Jung-hyun cut off specific candidates in one district after another, and the primary elections degenerated into something resembling a "candy vendor's tray" at a rural market? It is simply embarrassing to even speak of "principles."
Originally, how much candy is to be cut off is up to the candy vendor. Nominations are no different. They give a generous amount to some, a thin amount to others, and sometimes nothing at all to others. What matters is not the standard, but the emotional state of the candy vendor holding the tray. That is why it is said that things are at the whim of the candy vendor.
Then, what is the meaning of this commotion currently unfolding in Busan Buk-gap? Simply put, it is a "cauldron and spoon." It is a sordid struggle for self-interest. What is absurd is that Korean conservatism is already withering away. The local elections are not the issue. Conservatives are not only ill-mannered but also rotten to the core. It means they have no future.
Even with the playing field tilted, those who claim to be conservatives still obsess over "who gets the nomination." That is why it is a "cauldron and spoon." It is like someone grabbing a spoon and causing a commotion, deciding the order in which to serve the rice, when the cauldron is cracking and the rice is barely ready.
This self-portrait of Korean conservatism is simply embarrassing and absurd. The "southeast wind for conservative reconstruction" mentioned by Han Dong-hoon is not a natural wind that blows when the time is right. It is a wind that can only blow when vested interests are relinquished and citizens respond to the grand premise of great political reform. People are currently hoping for a breath of fresh air from Han Dong-hoon.
If we continue to divide the candy tray with a rubber band yardstick like we do now, and fight over a cracked pot with spoons in hand, the outcome is obvious. The candy melts, the rice burns, and the game ends.
No nomination for Busan Buk-gap.
This is a desperate measure to completely put an end to the rotten rubber band yardsticks of Korean politics, the candy-platform-like political arena, and the tenacious "clique" network—as tough as a cow's sinew—that transcends left and right and encompasses both ruling and opposition parties through pots and spoons.
