거창군과 경상남도교육청은 최근 학령인구 감소와 구도심 공동화 현상으로 인해 많은 어려움을 겪고 있는 거창초등학교 부지에 거점 돌봄시설을 조성해 인공지능, 코딩 등 양질의 방과 후 강의와 평생교육 프로그램을 제공하는 등 초등학생부터 평생교육까지 전담하는 학교복합시설을 구축할 계획이다.
이날 간담회에서는 거창군의 교육발전특구 지정 기본방향과 학교복합시설 구축 방향 등에 대해 참석자 간 논의가 이뤄졌으며 지역소멸 위기를 극복하고 학교와 지역에서 필요로 하는 학교복합시설 구축과 거창군 교육발전특구를 위해 지속적으로 협의한다는 데 의견을 모았다.
