브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 시진핑 중국 국가주석이 지난달 조 바이든 미국 대통령과 가진 정상회담 자리에서 대만과 통일하겠다고 직설적으로 말한 것으로 뒤늦게 전해졌다.
미국 NBC는 20일(현지시간) 정부 고위 관계자 3명을 말을 인용해 이같이 보도했다.
시진핑 주석은 지난 11월 15일 캘리포니아주 샌프란시코에서 가진 미중 정상회담 자리에서 바이든 대통령에게 "중국은 대만과 통일하겠다"면서 "중국이 선호하는 것은 무력이 아닌 평화통일"이라고 발언했다.
시 주석은 통일 시기에 대해선, 미군 고위간부가 2025년에서 2027년 경 중국이 대만 점령에 나설 것이란 예측을 내놓은 것을 먼저 언급하며 "자신은 시기를 못박은 적이 없기 때문에 이 예측은 틀렸다"고 말한 것으로 전해졌다.
아울러 시진핑 주석은 바이든 대통령에게 '미국은 중국의 평화통일 목표를 지지하며 대만 독립을 지지하지 않는다'는 성명을 발표해줄 것을 요청했지만 백악관은 이런 요청을 거부했다고 이 매체는 보도했다.
한편, 백악관은 이같은 보도 내용에 대해 "새로운 사실이 아니다"라며 확대해석을 경계했다.
존 커비 백악관 국가안보회의(NSC) 전략소통조정관은 이날 브리핑에서 "두 정상간 구체적 대화 내용은 밝힐 수 없다"면서 "시진핑 주석은 통일에 대한 열망을 공개적으로 밝혀왔다. NBC의 보도 역시 새로운 것이 없고, 다른 것도 없다"고 밝혔다.
커비 조정관은 그러면서 "우리는 '하나의 중국' 정책과 대만 독립을 지지하지 않는다는 점도 분명히 해왔다"며 "특히 무력을 통한 상황 변경을 지지하지 않는다는 입장을 밝혀왔다"고 설명했다.

Xi Jinping Warns President Biden Of "Unifying Taiwan"
Chinese President Xi Jinping was quoted as saying that he would reunify with Taiwan at a summit with U.S. President Joe Biden last month.
