사람은 삶에는 전혀 예측하지 못한 '굴곡(屈曲=이리저리 굽어 꺾여 있음)'이 있다. 필자는 담양 농고(담양실업고교 졸업. 강남대 신학과 졸업. 고려대 언론대학원 최고위과정 1년 수료)를 졸업했다. 농부 집안에 태어나 고등학교 시절까지 농부로서 지게를 짊어지는 삶이었다.
1973년 군대를 제대하고 서울에 취업이 돼, 천하의 고아처럼 서울에 입성 했다. 아는 사람이 아무도 없었다. 그래서 남대문 시장에서 군대용 침낭 하나를 사, 그 침낭을 회사의 책상 위에 깔고 그곳에서 잠을 잤다. 책상 위의 삶이었다. 이를 필자는 '상숙자(床宿者) 생활'이라고 표현한다. 책상 위에서 잠을 자다가 책상 아래로 떨어져 부상을 당했다. 그 뒤부터는 책상 밑에서 잠을 잤다. 이를 '하숙자(下宿者) 생활'이라 표현한다. '상숙자 생활'-'하숙자 생활'은 내가 만든 조어(造語)이다. 이처럼, 잠을 잘 처소가 없는 가난한 삶도 살아봤다.
월세생활도 했다. 월세가 밀려 쫓겨날 위기도 경험했다. 신문업의 맨손 창업으로 수난을 겪기도 했다. '일간 펜( 펜 그리고 자유)'이라는 전국지 일간신문을 경영하다가 노조결성으로 일간신문을 폐업하고, 파산위기로 내몰려보기도 했다. 이런저런 어려움을, 삶의 굴곡(屈曲)이라고 표현하련다.
