호주에서 수많은 미스테리한 사건들이 있지만 그 중에서 가장 압권은 당시 현직 총리인 헤럴드 홀트(Harold Holt, 1908~1967) 총리의 실종 사건이 아닐까 싶다. 홀트는 1908년 호주 뉴사우스 웨일스 주 스텐모어에서 토마스 홀트와 올리브 홀트 부부의 장남으로 태어났다. 성년으로 성장한 이후 멜버른의 퀸즈 칼리지에서 법학 박사 학위를 취득하기 위해 공부한 홀트는 1930년에 법학 박사 학위를 취득하였고, 1929년 뉴욕발 대공황으로 인해 일자리를 찾는 것이 늦어지기도 했지만 안정된 일자리에 취직함과 더불어 1936년에는 사업 파트너의 딸인 로라 트링과 결혼하게 되었다. 이후 생활이 점차 안정을 찾게 되면서 정치 경력을 시작한 해럴드 홀트는 대공황의 여파로 1931년에 창당되어진 보수주의 정파 호주연합당에 입당했다. 1934년의 호주 연방 선거와 1935년 3월의 선거에 연이어 출마했지만 낙선했고 1935년 8월의 포크너 선거구 보궐선거에서 가까스로 당선되어, 본격적인 정치 인생을 시작하게 된다.
이후 공급개발부 장관, 과학산업연구부 장관, 공군 및 민간 항공부 장관, 노동행정부 장관을 역임하고, 어린이 세금 감면을 실시한 홀트는 1945년 호주연합당이 해체되자, 자유당으로 자리를 옮겨 정치 인생을 이어갔고 1949년 포크너 선거구를 떠나 히긴스 선거구에서 다시 한 번 하원에 당선됨과 동시에 노동행정부 장관을 또 한 번 역임했다. 그리고 이민부 장관과 재무부 장관을 역임했으며, 1956년엔 하원 의장으로 선출되었다. 이후 재무부 장관을 역임하던 홀트는 경제 정책을 세우는데 실패하기도 했지만, 이어 경제 정책에 대해 어느 정도 국민들의 지지를 받아 1966년까지 장관직을 연임했다. 그리고 1966년 1월 27일에 호주 연방의 제 17대 총리로 취임하게 된다. 홀트는 호주 총리로 일하며 백호주의(White Australia Policy)를 철폐하는데 앞장 섰다.
이후 호주 예술 위원회를 설립하여 호주의 문화, 예술을 이민자 컨셉으로 완전히 정착시키는 성과를 세운 바 있다. 또 10진법을 도입하면서 기존의 호주 파운드를 현재의 호주 달러로 교체했던 인물이기도 하다. 외교적으로는 베트남 전쟁이 발발했을 때, 미군을 도와 호주군을 파병하였고, 서방 국가들 대다수가 대만과 단교하고 중국과 수교하는 가운데 국공내전 이후 대만 주권 미정론을 구실로 마비되었던 대만과의 외교관계를 정상화하여 타이베이에 대사관을 설치하는 독보적인 친서방 행보를 보였다. 국공내전 이후 주중 호주 대사관은 중국에서 철수했고 대만에 추가로 대사관을 설치하지 않았다. 주 호주 대만 대사관은 철수하지는 않았으나 새로운 대사가 임명되지 않으면고 영사만 주재하는 모호한 관계가 유지되고 있었다. 이는 6.25 전쟁 당시 중공과의 수교가 끊기긴 했으나 그렇다고 해서 장개석 정권에 비판적이었던 호주가 중국국민당 정권이 아니라 독립된 대만과의 새로운 외교관계를 맺고 싶었기 때문이다.
