KBS는 지난 2월7일 윤석열 대통령과의 신년 인터뷰를 방영했다. 이 인터뷰는 KBS 박장범 앵커가 단독으로 진행했다.
윤석열 대통령은 이 단독 인터뷰에서 북한 김정은 국방위원장과의 정상회담 추진의지(?)를 밝혔다.
박장범 앵커가 “역대 남북 정상들이 여러 차례 정상회담을 했습니다. 김대중 전 대통령이 처음으로 평양을 방문했었고 그다음에 이제 노무현 전 대통령 그리고 문재인 전 대통령도 평양을 갔습니다. 정상회담을 했는데 공교롭게도 3명의 전직 대통령과 이 진보 좌파 정당이고 이 보수 정당 우파 정당 출신 대통령들은 이명박 박근혜 그리고 윤석열 대통령까지 남북정상회담이 없었습니다. 물론 이제 지금 남북관계가 경색 관계이긴 합니다만 윤석열 대통령께서는 남북정상회담을 추진할 의지가 있으십니까?”라고 질문했다.
윤석열 대통령은 아래와 같이 답변했다.
“세 분 다 남북관계를 잘 해보려고 노력을 하신 거죠. 그러나 지금 우리가 돌이켜 봤을 때 아무런 어떤 소득이 없었다고 봐야 되겠죠. 그리고 남북 정상회담이라는 것 자체가 정치적인 어떤 이런 국면 전환이라든가 이런 면에서는 도움이 될지 몰라도 저는 선거 때부터 이런 보여주기식 외교나 보여주기식의 정치 일정은 안 하겠다고 국민들께 이제 말씀을 드렸습니다. 북이 핵을 포기하든 안 하든 남북 정상회담 할 수 있습니다. 그러나 그러기 위해서는 먼저 인도적인 협력관계가 필요하고 또 이것이 탑다운 방식으로 해서는 곤란하고요. 버텀 업 방식으로 양국의 실무자들 간에 어떤 교류와 이런 논의가 진행이 되면서 의제도 만들어 놓고 또 거기에 대해서 결과를 조금 준비를 해놓고 정상회담을 해야 되는 것이지 그냥 남북 정상회담 추진한다라고 해서 끌고 나가는 것은 결국은 또 아무 결론과 소득 없이 보여주기 하는 것에 끝날 수가 있다 이런 얘기죠. 그래서 세 분의 대통령들께서 노력을 하셨지만 조금 더 더 단단한 실무자들의 이런 교류와 논의가 더 뒷받침이 됐더라면 더 낫지 않았겠나 그래 생각을 하고요. 그걸 거부하지 않는다면은 저희는 뭐 양측의 실무자들 간에 이런 소통과 논의가 진행될 수 있도록 저는 뭐 하겠습니다.”
박장범 앵커가 재차 “남북한 정상회담이 북한 지배계층과의 교류라면 대한민국 대통령으로서 북한의 국민들 우리의 동포들에게 어떤 메시지를 전하고 싶으세요?”라고, 질문했다. 윤석열 대통령의 답변(아래)이 이어졌다.
“북한 주민은 저희들이 북한 국민이라고 안 하지 않습니까? 북한 주민은 우리 헌법상 대한민국 국민입니다. 그래서 이분들이 최소한의 어떤 인간의 존엄성을 지킬 수 있는 그런 도움을 우리가 줘야 되고 현실적으로는 뭐 탈북민에 대해서 배려하고 지원하는 거 그것이 중요하다고 생각하고 어쨌든 인도주의적인 어떤 지원을 할 수 있다면 북한 주민들의 어떤 좀 생활이 열악한 생활이 개선될 수 있는 그런 도움을 주고 싶습니다.”
남북정상회담 관련 질문은 단독 인터뷰의 마지막 부분에 배치했다. 이 질문을 왜 인터뷰의 맨 마지막 부분에 배치했을까? 국내의 여러 가지 사안 보다는 중요하지 않아서, 맨 후미에 배치했을까? 그 이유는 알 수 없다. 이 인터뷰에서 언급된 내용을 옮기면 아래와 같다.

윤석열 대통령의 남북정상회담에 관한 답변에서 정상회담 추진에 대해서 얼버무리는 발언을 했다. 아주 중요한, 주어(핵심 내용)를 발언하지 않았다.
