윤석열 대통령이 16일 한국과학기술원(KAIST) 학위수여식에 참석해 "실패를 두려워 말고 과감하게 도전하라"고 졸업생들을 격려했다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 대전시 유성구 카이스트에서 열린 '2024 학위수여식'에 참석해 축사에서 "마음껏 도전을 이어갈 수 있도록 정부가 힘껏 지원하겠다"며 이같이 말헸다. 윤 대통령의 카이스트 방문은 이번이 세 번째다.
그러면서 "매년 카이스트를 방문하는 이유가 우리나라 최고 과학 인재들이 대한민국은 물론 인류 미래를 더욱 밝고 풍요롭게 만들 것이란 기대·믿음 때문"이라고 말했다.
또 "카이스트 설립(1971년) 반세기 만에 대한민국이 세계 최고 과학기술 강국이 되었고 카이스트가 그 핵심 역할을 담당하고 있다"며 "카이스트가 키워낸 7만6000여 과학기술 인재들이 1300여 기업을 창업해 스타트업 코리아를 이끄는 등 국내외 유수 연구기관·산업현장서 과학기술 기반 혁신을 주도하고 있다"고 말했다.
이어 "과학 강국으로의 퀀텀 점프를 위한 R&D(연구개발) 예산을 대폭 확대하겠다"며 "도전적 혁신적 연구와 신진 연구자 성장을 전폭 지원하겠으며 과학기술이 그 나라 미래·성장 핵심"이라고 강조했다.
더불어 "첨단 과학기술 인재들에게 대한민국 미래가 달려 있다"며 "카이스트 졸업생들이 과학기술·산업 발전을 이끄는 대한민국 리더로 성장하고, 선배들이 쌓아온 찬란한 성과를 넘어 더 위대한 혁신을 이뤄낼 것이라 굳게 믿는다"고 덧붙였다.
이날 카이스트 학위수여식에서 학사 694명·석사 1564명·박사 756명이 학위를 받아 총 3014명의 과학기술인재가 배출됐다.
