윤석열 대통령이 6일 미국 전략국제문제연구소(CSIS) 대표단을 만나 "지난해 70주년을 맞이한 한·미동맹이 세계 자유·평화·번영을 위해 더욱 힘차게 전진하기 위해선 미국 조야의 변함없는 지지가 중요하다"고 당부했다.
윤 대통령은 이날 용산 대통령실에서 가진 존 햄리 미 CSIS 회장 포함 대표단과의 접견에서 "그 과정에 CSIS가 구심점이 돼주길 바란다"며 이같이 밝혔다고 대통령실이 전했다. CSIS는 미국 대표적 대외정책 싱크탱크다.
윤 대통령은 "미국 주요 싱크탱크 최초로 한국 석좌 직을 설치하고 한·미 연례 포럼을 개최하는 등 그간 한·미동맹의 든든한 후원자로서 많은 역할을 해 왔다"고 평가했다.
햄리 회장은 "윤 대통령 리더십 아래 한·미동맹이 한층 도약하고 있으며 특히 지난해 대통령 국빈 방미·캠프데이비드 한·미·일 정상회의는 한·미동맹 성공·발전을 상징적으로 보여준 이정표가 됐다"고 답했다.
그러면서 "세계 평화·번영을 위해 책임·기여를 다 하는 대한민국의 글로벌 중추 국가 비전에 대한 미국 조야 지지가 확고하다"며 "CSIS 차원서도 한·미동맹 발전을 위해 계속 노력해 나갈 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
오찬을 겸한 이 자리엔 빅터 차 CSIS 한국 석좌·매튜 포틴저 전 백악관 국가안보부 보좌관·앨리슨 후커 전 국가안전보장회의(NSC) 아시아 담당 선임보좌관 등이 함께 했다.
