브레이크뉴스 최애리 기자= 가상화폐 '테라·루나' 폭락 사태의 핵심 인물인 권도형(32) 테라폼랩스 대표가 미국이 아닌 한국으로 송환될 예정이다.
7일(현지시간) AP통신 보도에 따르면 몬테네그로 고등법원은 권도형씨에 대한 미국 인도 결정을 뒤집고 한국으로 송환을 결정했다.
앞서 몬테네그로 항소법원은 지난 5일 권씨를 미국으로 범죄인 인도해야 한다고 결정했던 포드고리차 고등법원의 판결을 깨고 사건을 다시 판단하라며 원심법원에 재심리를 명했다.
항소법원은 한국이 미국보다 빠르게 권씨에 대한 범죄인 인도를 요청했다는 점과 권씨의 국적, 범행 장소 등을 고려하면 국제 조약에 따라 한국으로 송환돼야 한다고 판단한 것이다.
다만 포드고리차 고등법원의 마리야 라코비치 대변인은 "이번 결정에 대해 다시 항소할 수 있다"면서 "최종 판결이 언제 내려질 지는 아직 불투명하다"고 설명했다.
만약 권씨의 한국 송환이 결정되면, 미국으로 송환됐을 경우보다 낮은 형량을 선고받을 가능성이 커지는 것이다. 법조계에선 권씨가 미국에서 형량을 받는다면 100년이 넘는 형도 가능할 것이지만 한국은 경제사범에 대해 최대 형량이 40년으로 낮다고 전했다.
한편 테라·루나 폭락 사태는 알고리즘 스테이블 코인 테라가 달러화와의 페깅(가치 고정)이 끊어지면서 테라의 가격을 지지해주던 자매 코인 루나의 가격도 연쇄 폭락한 사건이다. 이 사태로 인해 세계 암호화폐 시장에 50조원 가량의 손해를 끼쳤다.
권씨는 폭락 직적인 지난 2022년 4월 말 출국해 본사가 있는 싱가포르에 머물다가 같은 해 9월 아랍에미리트(UAE)를 거쳐 동유럽 세르비아로 도주한 것으로 알려졌다.
이후 2023년 3월 몬테네그로 포드고리차 공항에서 위조된 코스타리카 여권을 사용해 두바이행 전용기에 탑승하려다 체포됐다.
