미국이 대한민국 정부에도 ‘홍해 보호’ 지원을 요청해서 청해부대 파견을 검토한다는데 이럴 때는 가만히 있는 것이 가장 좋은 방법이다.. 이명박 정권 때 "아덴 만의 여명" 작전이 떠오르는 모양이다. 하긴, 현 정권 인사들이 MB 측 인사들이니 그 사건이 떠오르긴 하겠지만 예멘 후티 군대는 "아덴 만의 여명" 작전 때의 소말리아 해적들하고는 차원이 다른 군사들이다.
후티는 사실상 예멘의 정규군에 가깝고 나름 최신 무기들도 갖고 있다. 그렇다고 아주 훌륭한 수준은 아니지만 소말리아 해적들의 무기보다는 훌륭하다. 그리고 우리가 나서는 순간 단순히 홍해의 위험에서 벗어나는 수준이 아니다. 캐나다, 호주, 독일, 프랑스 등도 사실상 참여를 거부했는데 고스란히 중공, 북괴의 위협에서 우리 전력을 분산시켜 파병해야 할 필요가 있나? 후티를 없애기 위해 예멘 땅 본토 상륙도 각오해야 할 수도 있다. 상륙 작전은 군 피해가 늘어날 각오를 해야 한다.
우리 선박이 후티에게 공격 받은적 없고 이스라엘에 무역 반 이상을 의존하고 있는 것도 아닌데 스스로 섶을 지고 불 속에 뛰어들어야 할 이유는 없다. 그리고 확실히 해두어야 할 것은 이스라엘로 향하는 선박이 공격을 받는 것이지 다른 나라로 가는 선박을 공격하지 않는다는 것이다. 후티는 오래 전부터 그런 사실을 공표해왔고 수에즈 운하를 통해 유럽으로 가는 선박은 실제로 공격한 바 없다. 다만 이스라엘로 가는 상선만 공격했었다.

결과적으로 미국이 혼자 예멘 사태를 해결하기 어려우니 동맹국들의 손을 빌리는 것이다. 미국이 정말로 세계 최강이자 강대국이라면 왜 동맹국들의 손을 빌리는가? 혼자 해결하면 되는 것을 말이다. 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁 때도 느끼는 것이지만 미국은 더 이상 최강이 아닌듯 하다. 미국이 진정한 세계 최강이고 여전히 건재한다면 이번 기회에 입증하면 될 것이다. 미국은 여전히 세계 최강이자 무적이라면 스스로 증명하고 입증해야 한다. 동맹국들이 거부하는데 강제로 참전을 독려하지 말고 스스로 해결하는 것이 좋다.
