윤석열 대통령이 20일 올리버 다우든 영국 부총리를 접견하고 "이번 회의 주제인 '미래세대를 위한 민주주의 증진' 방안에 대한 활발한 논의를 기대한다"고 말했다고 대통령실이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 이날 용산 대통령 청사에서 제3차 민주주의 정상회의 참석차 방한한 다우든 부총리를 접견 후 "의회 민주주의 원조 국가 영국이 민주주의 정상회의에 적극 참여하고 있음을 환영한다"며 이같이 말했다고 대통령실이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 지난해 11월 영국 국빈 방문을 계기로 체결한 '다우닝가 합의'를 언급 후 "앞으로 이 합의가 충실히 이행되도록 각별한 관심을 당부한다"고 덧붙였다.
다우든 부총리는 "영국은 인도·태평양 지역과의 협력을 확대해 나가는 과정서 자유·인권·법치 가치를 공유하는 국가이자 글로벌 중추 국가로 도약하는 한국과의 관계 강화를 매우 중요하게 생각하고 있다"고 화답했다.
윤 대통령과 다우든 부총리는 한반도 지역 정세 관련해서도 의견을 교환 후 '양국이 민주주의를 증진하고 수호하는 데 기여할 수 있도록 긴밀히 협력해 나가자'는데 의견을 같이 했다.
