오늘은 이슬람 뿐 아니라 유태교에도 과격한 근본주의 단체가 존재하고 있다는 것을 알려드리는 차원으로 포스팅을 하고자 한다. 하레디(Haredi)는 극보수주의 유태교 종파를 숭상하는 유태인 집단을 통칭하는 단체로 일부 종파를 제외하면 대개 폐쇄적이고 근본주의적인 성향을 보이고 있다. 하레디는 처음부터 하레딤(Haredim)이란 이름으로 생겨난 것이 아니며 일부 정통파 유태교들이 현대에 와서 그와 같이 분류가 되는 것으로 알려졌다.
하레디 거의 대부분은 토종 유태인들이 아니라 아슈케나지 유태인에 속해 있다. 대개 세파르딤 사회의 경우 중세 세파르딤(Sephardim) 출신 의사이자 신학자였던 마이모니데스(Maimonides), 히브리어로 모세 벤 마이몬(משה בן מימון)의 영향으로 인해 근본주의 및 신비주의 계열의 분파들과 더불어 합리주의-이성주의 계열 분파들 사이의 갈등을 조화할 여지가 있었다.
그러나 물론 세파르딤 중에서도 하레디로 인식되는 종파들이 존재하고 있는데 비율상으로 소수에 불과하다. 이들을 대표적인 인물로 이라크 출신이자 이스라엘 친(親) 하레디 계열 시온주의 정당 샤스의 영적 지도자였던 오바디아 요세프(Ovadia Yosef)가 있지만 세는 매우 약한 편이다.
그러나 아슈케나지 유태인 사회에서는 이와 같은 합리주의-이성주의적인 중재 역할을 할 만한 구심점이 부족했다. 하레디들은 이스라엘이 건국되기 전부터 예루살렘에서 공동체를 이루어 살던 유태인들도 있었고 이후에 해외에서 들어온 사람들도 있는데, 매우 배타적이고 과격함으로 인해 이스라엘 입장에서 볼 때 매우 큰 근심거리 중 하나로 여겨지고 있는 실정이다.
이스라엘에는 메아 셰아림, 벳 이스라엘, 게울라, 하르 노프, 라못, 라맛 쉴로모, 산헤르리아, 네베 야아콥, 말랏 다프나, 라맛 에쉬콜, 에즈랏 토라, 그리고 텔아비브 인근의 브네이 브락 등, 지역에 하레디 공동체들이 존재하며 특히 브네이 브락과 메아 셰아림 지역이 하레디 사회에서 중요한 지역으로 알려지고 있다.
영국에서는 맨체스터에 하레디 공동체가 존재하고 있으며 스텐포드 힐에는 시오니스트와 거리가 있으며 팔레스타인 국기를 옷깃에 달고 다니는 네투레이 카르타(Nerurey Karta)들이 살고 있다. 최근 하마스-이스라엘 전쟁에서 반(反) 이스라엘 시위를 주도하고 있는 유태인들이 바로 네투레이 카르타라고 볼 수 있다.
이들은 철저히 교리주의적인 면을 중시하며 <토라>에 쓰여진 내용들을 중시하는 유태인들인만큼, 짙은 호모포비아적인 성향을 갖고 있다. 비교적 최근에 생긴 미국 뉴저지의 퍼세익(Passaic)과 헝가리의 과거 서트마르네메티(Szatmárneméti)라는 지역에서 유래한 집단이이자 제2차 세계대전 이후로 발전한 공동체인 하시드 계파의 사트마르(Satmar)가 살고 있는 윌리엄스버그, 뉴욕과 디트로이트, 로스앤젤레스, 캐나다의 토론토, 그리고 몬트리올에 이디시어를 모어로 쓰는 상당한 규모의 하레디 공동체가 있다.
특히 디트로이트의 하레디 회당에서는 유태교로 개종한 흑인들이 존재하는데 이는 최근에 하레디가 교리주의적이고 순혈을 강조하던 입장에서 벗어난 것으로 해석되어 진다. 대개 이들은 이민족에게 매우 배타적인 성향이라 집단의 지도자들이 수용소에 갇혀 살았던 기억을 가지고 있기 때문에 반인종적, 반민족적인 특성을 갖고 있지만 최근에 그와 같은 폐쇄성이 옅어졌다는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
하지만 모든 하레디들이 성직자들인 '랍비'들이 아니며 상대적으로 적긴 하지만 다른 직업을 가지면서 하레디에 적극적인 사람들도 있다. 이들은 종교적인 광신과 교조주의 활동을 하고 있기에 세금을 내지 않지만 출산율은 엄청나게 높은 편에 있다. 대부분 10대 후반에 결혼하여 아무리 늦어도 20대 중반을 넘기지 않는다. 다만 20대 중반을 넘어도 결혼을 못 하거나 안 하는 경우도 없지는 않다. 물론 일부 하레디 공동체들이 이와 같은 성향을 보인다는 것은 인정하고 있으나 전체 하레디가 다 그와 같은 것은 아니고 연애 결혼도 간간히 존재하고 있는 편이다.
평균 출산율 2.5명인 다른 이스라엘 유태인들에 비해 평균 6~7명 대라는 엄청난 출산율을 기록하고 있고 인구증가율은 연 평균 4%대에 달하는 수준으로 2009년에 75만이었던 것이 2022년에는 122만 명이 되었다. 이들은 또한 투표율도 높아, 이를 바탕으로 이스라엘 국회의원 120명 중 20명을 차지하여 정치적 영향력도 막강한 편이다.
그렇기 때문에 다른 정치인들 사이에서 보조금 문제와 더불어 정치적 영향력을 넓혀가는 하레디들에 대해 그다지 이스라엘 본토에서는 좋게 보지 않고 있다. 그 이유는 이스라엘 정부로부터 혜택은 얻을만큼 얻고 세금을 내지 않기 때문이다. 이처럼 하레디들의 출산률이 높은 이유는 이들 사이에서 경전 <토라>에서 "생육하고 번성하라"라는 구절을 근거로 피임을 죄악시하고 출산을 적극적으로 장려하기 때문이다.
기본적으로 이들은 '토라 연구자'들이기는 하지만 돈을 버는 것을 죄악시 하니 대개 실업자들이 많다. 또한 병역 거부자들이면서 타 이스라엘 국민들에게 세금으로 생계보조를 받는 등 여러모로 타 유태인들 입장에서는 짜증나는 존재들이다. 하지만 생계보조 액수가 풍족한 것은 아니기 때문에 매우 가난하여 일부 젊은 하레디들은 일을 해서 돈을 벌려고 하기도 한다.
즉, 이스라엘 정부나 국가에 기여하는 일이 거의 없이 유태인들의 세금만 축내는 자들인데 이들의 숫자가 많고 정치인들도 있으며 해외 지부들의 세력도 상당하기 때문에 결코 만만치 않은 자들이다. 이들은 유태인과 유태교만이 전 세계에서 가장 우월한 민족이자 종교라는 선민의식을 기본적으로 탑재하고 있다. 가자 지구나 요르단 강 서안 지구 등에서 온갖 악랄한 인권 탄압을 하고 있는 이스라엘 정부 당국에 대해서도 지나치게 온건한 데다가, 원리주의적인 유태인 권익을 충분히 대표하지 않고 있다며 비판하기도 한다.
자신들은 안식일을 위해 군대도 가지 않으면서 팔레스타인인에 대한 멸종을 주장하고 있다. 그렇지 않아도 갈수록 전 세계적으로 비난이 커져가고, 심지어 미국에서도 비난 여론이 팽배하고 있는데도 이스라엘의 대 팔레스타인, 대 아랍 정책을 갈수록 더 극단적으로 몰고 가려고 하는 자들이다. 이들은 팔레스타인인은 <토라>에 나와 있는 신의 말씀대로 "가나안의 종자들이니 씨를 말려야 한다."고 주장하며 아랍계 유대인, 기독교인, 무슬림들을 굉장히 싫어해 야만인으로 멸시하는 것은 기본이다.
특히 팔레스타인인의 유태인 테러와 범죄가 발생하면 하레디인들이 나서서 아랍인, 팔레스타인인, 기독교인을 대상으로 증오 범죄를 저질러 사태 악화시키는 데 기여를 하고 있다. 이스라엘에서 양심 있는 지식인과 온건파들이 팔레스타인인들과 평화와 공존의 길을 찾아야 한다고 주장하면 배신자, 매국노로 몰아 조리돌림하려고 들고 있으며 무신론자들도 극단적으로 싫어하여, 신은 없다고 하면 하레디인들은 무신론자들에게 심각한 테러를 저지른다.
외국인들도 아주 싫어해서, 종종 외국인을 대상으로 테러와 폭력을 저지른다. 하레디 극단조직인 리볼트(Revolt) 같은 경우 "이스라엘에 거주하는 모든 외국인을 몰아내 버려야 한다"는 주장을 할 정도이니 그 극단성은 탈레반이나 IS, 하마스보다 심하다. 이들은 일부러 불을 질러 팔레스타인 아기를 산 채로 태워 죽여놓고 그 사진을 찍어서 즐거워하며 음악 틀어놓고 춤춰대서 논란이 된 적 있다.
이러니 팔레스타인 사람들이 분노한 것은 물론이고, 이스라엘인들과 극우 정치인들도 이 사건에 경악했다. 당시 야만적인 하레디인들은 나중에 전부 이스라엘 경찰한테 체포되었다. 이스라엘 국가 안보에 제대로 기여라도 하면서 극단적인 대외관을 가지고 있으면 도덕적으로 비판받아도 이해가 되는데 하레디들은 일반적인 국가의 관점에서 이스라엘에게 생산적인 기여는거의 없고 군사적 '해결'을 불러올 수 밖에 없는 팔레스타인에 대한 강경책에선 가장 적극적이라 할 수 있다.
이와 같은 하레디들이 이스라엘 인구의 주류가 될수록 서방 사회에서 이스라엘에 대한 지지는 떨어질 수 밖에 없고, 이는 이스라엘 안보의 치명적인 공백으로 이어진다. 게다가 하레디들은 이슬람의 성지인 알 아크사 성전을 파괴하기 위해 조직적으로 움직이려 한다. 그러한 일환으로 2023년 10월 알 아크사 모스크를 무단으로 점령하려 들면서 예배하던 팔레스타인인들을 하레디들이 공격하자 하마스가 이를 이용해 전면적으로 이스라엘을 침공하며 2023년 하마스-이스라엘 전쟁이 발생하는 직접적인 원인을 제공했다.
하레디들은 21세기 들어서 네타냐후 정권의 유대민족 법이 상징하는 이스라엘 사회 전반의 극우화를 주도하는 집단이다. 그런데 막상 팔레스타인 측과 대립이 심해질수록 더 커질 수 밖에 없는 국방에 대한 부담은 하나도 안 지려 하고 있다. 이들은 일만 벌이고 수습은 이스라엘 정부와 타 유태인 단체들에게 떠 넘기는 굉장히 악질적인 자세를 고수하고 있는 것이다. 사실 그래서 하레디 같은 세력을 미국이나 집단 서방, 이스라엘 정부가 어느 정도 적절히 통제해야 하는 이유다.

They are claiming the extinction of Palestinians without even going to the army for the Sabbath.
They are trying to drive Israel's policies toward Palestine and the Arab world more and more extreme even though criticism is growing around the world, and even in the United States.
