필자는 ‘지게 예찬론자’이다. 우리의 선조들은 지게를 발명, 활용해 왔다. 수 천 년 간 지게질로 농경문명(農耕文明)을 이어왔다. 운반 수단이 기계화 되지 않았을 때는 지게질이 최선이었다.
한국 민족은 지게질로 단련된 민족이다. 농사를 지어 수확할 때는 모든 수확물들을 지게로 져 날랐다. 그러하니 등과 허리가 튼튼하다. 또한 벼-보리 등을 심고 가꾸고 수확했던 게 강건한 팔과 손이었다. 그래서 한국인 모두는 그 기를 이어받아 손놀림이 빠르다.
한국인은 오랜 동안 농경사회를 살았다. 수천 년 간, 대대로 논과 밭에 곡식을 심고-가꾸고-수확하며 살아왔다.
이런 중에 지게가 발명됐다. 필자는 지게 예찬론자이다. 지게란 y자 모양의 나뭇가지 두 개를 맞대 결합시켜, 두 끈을 달아 등에 짊어지는 구조물이다. 이 지게에 온갖 물건들을 져 날랐다. 볏단-보릿단 등의 식자재와 화목 등을 져 날랐다. 지게 지고 서 있는 바보는 이 세상에 없다. 지게를 짊어지면, 앞을 향해 나아가야 한다. 전진해야 한다. 미래를 향해야 한다. 수 천 년에 걸친 지게를 짊어지는, 이런 훈련의 결과물이 오늘날의 한민족 후예들이다.
