3월27일(음력 2월18일)은 필자의 생일입니다. 사람의 태어남을 12가지 동물에 빗댄 12간지(干支)의 6바퀴 돌기를 완료하고, 7바퀴 돌기를 새로이 시작하는 날입니다. 나름, 의미가 있습니다. 이 날을 전후해 그동안 수집한 누드화가 총 2,000점을 상회(上廻)했기 때문입니다.

이영일 전 의원이 직접 답사한 일본의 나오시마(直島)-쇼도시마(小豆島)에 건립된, 일본의 미술관 이야기가 부럽게 다가왔습니다. 이영일 전 의원은 지난 2월9일자 페이스북에 올린 “쓰레기 더미가 설치미술의 현장으로 변한 나오시마(直島)이야기”라는 제목의 글이, 계속해서, 눈에 아른거립니다.
이영일 전 의원은 이 글에서 “연초에 3박4일 짧은 일정으로 일본 시고쿠(四國)의 다까마스(高松) 지방을 다녀왔다. 다카마스는 나에게 생소한 지역이었지만, 지도에서 보니 큐슈의 중심도시 후쿠오카 바로 밑의 시고쿠의 중심도시여서 서울에서 항공편으로 1시간 30분 정도밖에 걸리지 않는, 가까운 거리다. 일본의 대 도시들보다 덜 개발된 덕분에 우리의 어린 시절을 회상할만한 시골스러움과 전통 일본의 모습을 간직하고 있는 것이 외국인들에게는 볼거리가 되었다”면서 “다카마스의 관광지로서의 매력은 도시 자체보다는 다카마스에 이어지는 두 개의 섬, 즉 나오시마(直島)와 쇼도시마(小豆島)에서 빛났다. 나오시마는 우리 서울의 난지도처럼 사람들이 살지 못하는 쓰레기더미로 방치된 섬이었는데, '메네세'라는 일본의 부호가 이 섬의 40%를 매입하여 개발에 착수했다고 한다. 관광지를 조성하는 것이 아니라 일본 전후 최고의 건축 대가로 알려진 안도 다다오와 제휴하여 이곳에 미술관을 건립하기 시작한 것이다. 그것도 현대미술의 새로운 흐름인 설치미술의 현장으로 이 섬의 면모를 바꿔나가기 시작했다”고, 소개했습니다.
이어 “'메네세'는 '경제는 예술의 노예가 되어야 한다'는 구호를 만들면서 거금을 나오시마 미술관 개발에 투입, 메네세 미술관을 비롯하여 섬의 곳곳을 설치미술의 현장으로 바꾸어 나갔고, 우리나라 설치미술계의 대가로 알려진 이우환 화백의 전시장도 이곳에 전개되어 있다. 쓰레기 더미의 섬이던 나오시마가 이제는 안도와 '메네세'의 노력으로 미술의 섬으로 팔자가 바뀌어 버렸다”라고 덧붙였습니다.
