브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 이종섭 주호주 대사가 29일 사의를 표명하고, 고위공직자범죄수사처 수사에 강력 대응하겠다는 입장을 밝혔다.
이종섭 대사는 이날 변호인을 통해 "오늘 외교부 장관께 주호주 대사직을 면해주시기 바란다는 사의를 표명하고 꼭 수리될 수 있도록 해주실 것을 요청드렸다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "방산협력 주요 공관장 회의가 끝나도 서울에 남아 모든 절차에 끝까지 강력히 대응할 것"이라고 했다.
그는 또한 "공수처에 빨리 조사해 줄 것을 계속 요구해 왔다"며 "그러나 공수처는 아직도 수사기일을 잡지 않고 있다"고 지적하기도 했다.
한편 이종섭 대사는 국방부 장관 재직 시절 발생한 해병대 채모 상병 순직 사건과 관련, 수사외압 혐의로 공수처로부터 지난해 12월 출국금지 조치를 받았다.
하지만 이 대사가 주호주 대사로 임명되자, 법무부는 이의신청을 받아들여 출국금지를 해제했다. 이어 이 대사가 호주로 출국하자, '수사 도피'가 아니냐며 여론이 악화되기 시작했다. 결국 이 대사는 지난 21일 방산 협력 주요 공관장 회의 참석을 이유로 귀국했다.
