윤석열 대통령이 29일 해병대 채모 상병 순직 사건 수사 외압 의혹으로 고위공직자범죄수사처 수사를 받아온 이종섭 주호주대사 면직안을 재가했다고 대통령실이 전했다.
대통령실 대변인실은 이날 오후 언론 공지에서 "오늘 오후 외교부 장관이 제청한 이종섭 주 호주대사 면직안을 재가했다"고 전한 가운데 지난 4일 대사 임명 발표 후 25일 만이다.
이 대사 측 변호인 김재훈 변호사는 이날 오전 입장문에서 이 대사가 조태열 외교부 장관에게 '주호주 대사직을 면해주길 바란다'는 사의를 표명했다고 밝힌 바 있다.
이 대사는 입장문에서 "그동안 공수처에 빨리 조사해 달라 계속 요구해 왔으나 공수처는 아직도 수사 기일을 잡지 않고 있다"며 "방산협력 주요 공관장 회의가 끝나도 서울에 남아 모든 절차에 끝까지 강력 대응할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
또 "그러기 위해 오늘 외교부 장관께 주호주 대사직을 면해주시기 바란다는 사의를 표명하고 꼭 수리될 수 있도록 해주실 것을 요청드렸다"고 덧붙였다.
외교부는 이날 오전 이 대사 사의를 수용한 가운데 윤 대통령이 외교부 보고를 받은 후 이날 오후 면직안을 재가했다.
