지난 3월28일 저녁은 필자에겐 아주 특별한 날이었습니다. 필자는 한화갑 민주당 전 대표(이하 대표로 호칭)와 1986년 미국 뉴욕의 맨해튼에서 처음 만났습니다. 이 분이 독일에서 2년 유학을 마치고 미국 뉴욕의 맨해튼에 오셨을 때, 기자와 취재원 관계로 만났습니다. 그러하니 그간, 38년 간의 긴 관계를 유지해왔습니다. 이날 서울시 마포구 합정동 ‘푸줏간’이라는 삼겹살 식당에서 한화갑 전 대표의 제안으로 갖게 된, 조촐한 합동 생일잔치가 있었습니다. 한 대표의 부인인 정순애 여사와 필자의 생일을 함께 축하하는 만찬자리였습니다.

이 자리에서, 필자는 아래와 같이 말했습니다.

“미국에서 유학하신 이희호 여사께서는 YWCA 총무 당시인 1971년에 김대중 대통령과 결혼하셨습니다. 주변에서는 국회의원도 아닌 정치인인 김대중과 결혼하니 ‘손해’라고 말했다고 합니다. 이때 이희호 여사는 ’그 분은 내 도움을 필요로 합니다. 그러하니 내가 그 분을 도와드려야 합니다’라고, 말했다고 합니다. 그 이듬해인 1972년에 김대중 선생님이 대통령 후보가 됐을 때, 주변에서는 이희호 여사에게 ‘시집 잘 갔다’라고, 칭송해주었다고 합니다.”
