올해로 8년 연속 수상의 영예를 안은 울진대게는 해양수산 자원의 보고이며 수중 금강산이라 불리는 왕돌초 주변 해역에 서식하며, 맛과 품질이 뛰어나 소비자들로부터 많은 사랑을 받아왔다.
울진대게가 명품으로 인정 받을 수 있었던 것은 무엇보다 어업인들의 큰 노력이 있었기 때문이다.
죽변항과 후포항 그리고 구산항에 선적을 둔 90여척의 대게 자망어업인들이 자발적으로 구성한 대게자망자율공동체는 대게어장 가꾸기와 바다 자원 보호를 통해 지속적인 노력을 해왔다.
또한 대게 자원을 보호하기 위해서 6월부터 10월까지는 법적으로 대게 조업을 금지하고 있고, 조업이 가능한 11월도 추가로 조업을 금지하는 자율금어기를 지정하여 20년 동안 유지해 오고 있다.
더불어 울진대게 자원보호를 위해 전국에서 유일하게 어업인 자율관리로 1일 1척 위판량을 제한하는 “연안어업대게 TAC제도”를 시행하고 있는 한편, 대게 조업이 끝나는 5월경에는 대게 서식처 환경 회복을 위해 조업 중에 분실되거나 방치된 폐어망을 일제 수거하는 정화 작업을 펼치고 있다.
어업인들의 노력에 이어 경상북도와 울진군에서도 암컷 대게의 산란과 산란환경을 조성하는 대게 보육초(대게 인공어초)를 인위적으로 조성하는 등의 다양한 환경을 조성해 나가고 있다.
