윤석열 대통령이 15일 주 유엔 미국 대사를 접견하고 중동 사태 관련 "중동 정세로 인한 에너지·경제·공급망 문제와 사이버·기후변화 분야 등 갈등이 군사·정치·외교적 갈등으로도 연결될 수 있는 만큼 한·미 간에도 포괄적 전략적 공조를 이어가자"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실에서 방한 중인 림다 토마스 그린필드 대사를 만나 유엔안보리 이사국 활동과 한·미동맹·북한 문제 등에 대해 의견을 나누고 대북제재 결의 이행을 위한 협력을 강조하면서 이같이 말했다고 대통령실이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 "한국이 올해부터 2년간 유엔안보리 이사국으로 활동케 돼 기쁘게 생각한다"며 "유엔안전보장이사회가 제 역할을 수행하도록 한·미 양국이 긴밀히 협력해 나가길 기대한다"고 말했다.
또 "한·미동맹이 지난 70여년간 자유·민주주의·법치의 보편적 가치를 토대로 발전해왔고 글로벌 포괄 전략 동맹으로 나아가고 있다"고 말했다.
그린필드 대사는 "그 어느 때보다 한·미 공조가 견고한 이때 한국을 방문케 돼 뜻깊다"며 "한국이 캠프데이비드 한·미·일 협력체계를 주도하고 제3차 민주주의 정상회의를 개최하는 등 글로벌 리더십을 발휘하고 있다"고 평가했다.
또 "한국의 유엔안보리 이사국 수임을 계기로 한·미 양국이 각종 글로벌 현안에 대한 협력을 강화하고 있어 기쁘게 생각한다"며 "아이티에 대한 한국 정부 지원에 감사하다"고 말했다.
윤 대통령은 "유엔의 대북 제재 레짐을 굳건히 지켜 나가고 여타 회원국 결의 이행을 위한 안보리내 협력도 계속 강화해 나가야 할 것"이라고 강조했다.
그린필드 대사는 "북한의 핵미사일 개발 저지와 북한 인권 증진을 위한 한국 정부 노력을 적극 지지한다"며 "앞으로도 북한 문제·주요 글로벌 이슈에 한국과 긴밀한 협력을 꾀할 것"이라고 말했다.
