이번 사업은 전남 지역 내 5·18 주요 사적지와 관련 시설을 찾는 방문객들에게 전문적인 해설을 제공함으로써, 자칫 어렵게 느껴질 수 있는 현대사를 보다 쉽게 이해하고 공감할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 마련됐다.
전남도는 지난 2020년부터 지속적인 사적지 발굴 노력을 기울여 왔으며, 올해 3월까지 전남5·18기념사업위원회를 통해 역사적 보존 가치가 높은 장소 30개소를 ‘전남 5·18 사적지’로 지정·정비했다. 현재는 엄격한 교육 과정을 거친 18명의 역사해설사가 현장에서 활동 중이다.
