윤석열 대통령이 24일 초대 우주항공청장(차관급)에 윤영빈 서울대 항공우주공학과 교수를 내정했다.
또 1급인 우주항공임무본부장에 존 리 전 미국항공우주국(NASA) 본부장, 우주청 차장엔 노경원 과학기술정보통신부 연구개발정책실장을 각각 기용했다.
성태윤 대통령실 정책실장은 이날 용산 대통령실 브리핑에서 다음 달 27일 출범 예정인 우주항공청 고위직 인선을 발표하면서 이같이 전했다.
성 실장은 윤 초대 우주항공청장에 대해 "1996년부터 서울대 항공우주학과 교수로 재직하며 로켓추진연구실을 이끌고 있다"며 "액체로켓·가스터빈 엔진 등 연구를 40여년간 수행해오며 나로호·한국형 발사체 개발·달 탐사·1단계 사업 등에 참여 성공적 추진에 기여해온 우주 추진체 분야 우리나라 대표 연구자"라고 소개했다.
존 리 우주항공임무본부장에 대해선 "1992년부터 나사에서 근무를 시작해 29년간 재직하며 나사의 굵직한 우주 프로그램을 관리해 온 우주 분야 전문가"라고 설명했다.
노 차장에 대해선 "우주항공청 출범 산파 역할을 해왔고 기술에 대한 이해도·행정·전문성 모두 갖춘 최고 전문가"라며 "연구개발정책실장을 우주항공청 차장으로 내정한 건 우주항공청이 조기에 안정적 궤도에 오를 수 있도록 하기 위한 것"이라고 전했다.
성 실장은 "윤 대통령은 이번 인선을 진행하며 업계 최고 전문가들을 주요 직위에 내정한 만큼 우주항공청이 성공적으로 출범해 우리나라 우주 항공산업을 잘 이끌어 갈 수 있도록 철저히 준비해달라 당부했다"고 전했다.
