1979년은 기미년이었습니다.
1919년 3.1운동이 일어났던 해도 기미년이었습니다.
이 해, 필자는 주간종교(週刊宗敎) 신문의 기자(1979년-1981년)로서 조계종을 출입했던 '출입기자'였습니다.
당시 95세(조계종 수덕사 초대 방장. 당시, 스님 중 최고령. 103세 열반) 되셨던 혜암 스님을 친견(親見)했었는데, 이 때 혜암 스님이 필자에게 ‘심월상조(心月相照)’라는 한문 4자성어 글씨를 써 주셨습니다.
이 글의 뜻은 “보이지 않는 내 속의 내 마음과 하늘에 떠 있는 달이 서로 비추이니 참 즐겁도다(필자 번역)”는, 우주 일심동체를 뜻하는 구절입니다.
이 표구를 보관해오다가 습기가 많은 곳에 두었더니 곰팡이가 피었습니다.
그래서 유정염 문화재청 전문위원(문화재청 국가유산 문화재수리 기능자)에게 기증했었습니다.
그런데 올 불탄절을 맞아 곰팡이가 가득했던 그 표구를 깨끗하게 복원했다는 소식을 페이스북에서 접하고 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
필자가 놀란 첫째 이유는 올해 불탄절(부처님 오신 날)을 앞두고, 이 글씨가 복원됐다는 것입니다. 혜암 스님이 주신 4자성어가 여러분들의 삶의 지혜 쌓기에 보탬이 됐으면 합니다.
깜짝 놀란 둘째 이유는 곰팡이가 가득한 글씨가 원래 깨끗했던 상태로 복원된 기술력에 놀랐습니다. 유정염 위원님 대단하십니다.

필자는 젊은 시절, 종교 출입기자를 하면서, 나만의 인성(人性)이 다져졌다고 생각합니다. 여러 종교 단체를 취재하면서 여러 종교를 공부하게 됐습니다.
필자는 종교는 인간이 만든 발명품 가운데들 최고의 발명품이라고 생각해왔습니다. 불교의 경전은 부처가 사망한 이후 400여년 쯤에 만들어 졌습니다. 불경의 대부분은 “나는 이렇게 들었다”로 시작됩니다. 불경은 부처의 제자들인 비구들이 집대성한 것입니다.
기독교의 성경은 예수가 사망한 이후 110여 년 쯤에 만들어졌습니다. '성경 기자'들이 취재, 성경이 만들어졌습니다. 그러하니 종교란 인간의 발명품인 것입니다.
5월15일은 부처님 오신 날입니다. 서울시 종로구 견지동에 있는 조계사와 주변의 도로 가로수에는 연등(蓮燈)이 달아져 있습니다.

I believe that my character was developed while working as a religious reporter when I was young. He studied various religions while covering various religious groups.
I have always thought that religion is the best invention made by humans. Buddhist scriptures were created about 400 years after the death of his Buddha. Most of the Buddhist scriptures begin with “I heard thus.” Buddhist scriptures are compiled by Buddhist monks who are disciples of Buddha. The Christian Bible was created about 110 years after the death of Jesus. The Bible was created through the reporting of ‘Bible writers’. Therefore, religion is a human invention.
