제9회 전국동시지방선거가 40여 일 앞으로 다가오면서 출마 예정자들의 ‘사퇴 시계’가 빨라지고 있다.
대전·세종·충남선거관리위원회는 지방자치단체장 선거에 도전하려는 국회의원과 지방의원 등 공직자들의 사퇴 시한을 내달 4일로 확정했다고 22일 밝혔다.
이번 선거의 최대 변수는 국회의원 사직에 따른 재·보궐선거의 성사 여부다.
중앙선관위가 이달 30일까지 국회의장으로부터 궐원 통지를 받으면 해당 지역의 보궐선거는 6월 3일 지방선거와 함께 치러진다.
반면 5월 1일 이후 통지될 경우 보궐선거는 내년 4월 7일까지 미뤄진다. 사퇴 시점이 여야의 의석수 확보 전략과 직결되는 셈이다.
지방의원의 행보도 법 개정으로 인해 변화가 생겼다.
지난달 19일 공직선거법이 개정됨에 따라, 다른 지역의 장이나 의원 선거에 출마하려는 시·도 및 구·시·군의원 역시 5월 4일까지 직을 내려놓아야 한다.
사직의 효력은 수리 여부와 상관없이 사직원이 소속 기관에 접수된 시점부터 발생한다.
