2026 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 북중미 월드컵 아시아 지역 3차 예선 조 편성이 확정됐다. 그런데 죽음의 조를 피했다고 한다. 우선 전망으로 볼 때 한국은 월드컵 티켓을 차지할 것으로 생각이 된다. 북중미 월드컵에 출전 티켓이 아시아는 8.5장이라 각 A조부터 C조까지 조 2위만 하면 무난히 티켓을 손에 넣을 수 있기 때문이다. 나머지 2장은 A조부터 C조 3위끼리 아시아 플레이오프를 거쳐서 승자가 2장 가져가고 마지막 한 장은 북중미 팀들 중에 플레이오프 티켓을 확보한 팀과 자웅을 겨뤄 승자가 가져가는 방식이다. 무난히 조 2위는 할 수 있을 것 같은데 문제는 아시아의 축구강호라는 자존심이 문제다. 한국은 매번 "아시아의 호랑이" 라며 아시아의 최강이라는 것을 항상 자부해왔다. 그러나 64년 동안 아시안 컵 우승 하나 없는 팀이 "아시아의 최강"이라는 별호와 어울린다고 생각하는가?
현재 아시아의 최강은 냉정하게 말해 카타르다. 그 다음이 일본, 이란, 한국 순이다. 그런데 한국이 "아시아의 최강"이라니... 정말로 한국이 잘나갔을 때가 있었다. 그것도 8~90년대는 정말 그러했다. 그러나 그 때도 아시안 컵 우승과 인연은 없었지만 대개 한국을 아시아의 최강 중 한 팀으로 인정했다. 차범근, 이회택, 허정무, 조광래 같은 선수들은 명실상부 아시아를 대표하는 선수들이었다. 그리고 그 바톤을 김주성, 황선홍, 홍명보, 하석주, 서정원이 물려받았고 최용수, 김도훈, 이임생, 이을룡, 고종수 등으로 이어지고 박지성, 안정환, 송종국, 김남일, 이영표로 이어졌다. 이 때까지가 한국이 진정한 "아시아의 호랑이"였다. 그러나 그 이후에 다른 중동 팀들이 무섭게 성장했다. 그리고 동남아시아 팀들도 과거처럼 더 이상 한국의 승점자판기나 골 자판기 팀들이 아니다. 이들도 엄청나게 성장했다. 그리고 그 증거가 아시안컵에서 김판곤 감독의 말레이시아, 신태용 감독의 인도네시아라 볼 수 있다.
그런데 한국 축구인들이나 한국 국민들은 이들이 여전히 8~90년대 수준이라 생각하는 모양이다. 대다수 한국인들의 인식 변화 아주 느리게 진척되거나 고정관념처럼 박혀서 변하지 않는다. 축구만 그런게 아니라 국제 정세도 마찬가지다. 대개 한국인들은 중동이 여전히 4~50년대 무기를 쓰며 다 같이 덤벼도 이스라엘에게 패배할 것이라 생각한다. 그리고 여전히 러시아를 공산주의 국가로 생각하고 빨갱이라 생각한다. 러시아에서 공산주의가 30년 전에 이미 붕괴됐는데 여전히 푸틴 1당 독재에 야당도 없고 국민의 자유를 탄압하는 공산 국가로 본다. 나같은 사람이 러시아를 백날 자유롭게 왔다갔다 해도 소용이 없다. 그들에게는 한번 공산당이나 빨갱이면 영원한 공산당이자 빨갱이, 심지어 나는 쏘오련 공산당의 선전물로 자유롭게 다니는 쏘련의 특권을 받은 사람으로 생각한다. 이게 현재 한국인들의 보편적인 인식이다. 그리고 그런 인식은 절대로 바뀌지 않는다. 안 바뀌는 이유가 뭘까?. 그것은 옛날 시스템에 여전히 머물러 있는 "인식의 갈라파고스 심리"가 있기 때문이다.
그리고 그렇게 여기도록 정치꾼들과 언론들이 야합해 몰아가고 있다. 그러면서 국민들은 이들의 노예가 된다. 진실이 어떤지는 관심이 없고 찾아보는 것도 귀찮아 한다. 한국인들은 언론과 정치꾼들을 욕하지만 이율배반적으로 이들을 오히려 너무 잘 믿는다. 욕하면서도 잘 속아주고, 유튜브 같은데서 선동해대며 진실이 어쩌구 저쩌구하면 검증할 생각 없이 자기 생각과 맞아 떨어지면 박수 쳐주고 훌륭한 분석이라 떠 받들어주며 슈퍼쳇이나 돈을 투자한다. 나처럼 현지를 돌아다니며 전해주는 사람에 대해서는 투자에 매우 인색하지만 한국의 집구석이나 방구석에 앉아서 검증되지도 않은 인터넷 자료 뒤져가며 선동해대는 프로파간다 유튜버에게는 비싼 슈퍼쳇과 후원을 아끼지 않는다. 이게 대다수 한국인들의 특성이다. 내 말이 틀렸는가?
축구 얘기하다가 여기까지 와서 할 말을 다한 셈이 됐지만 축구로 보자면 한국 사람들 대부분 중동 국가 쯤이야, 동남아시아 쯤이야 5-0 이상 이겨줘야 기본이라 생각한다. 그들이 성장했으면 얼마나 했겠어. 손흥민, 이강인, 황희찬 같은 선수도 없는데, 그들이 잘해봐야 얼마나 잘해. 우린 월드컵 10회 연속 진출했고 저들 중에 누가 그 정도 했지? 이게 한국인들의 보편적인 시각이다. 그들의 노력은 헛짓이고 오일머니로 쌓은 노력이며 동남아시아 선수들은 피지컬이 작고 후진국이라 해봤자 옛날과 똑같을 것이라는 생각을 한다. 우리는 그렇게 평가하고 있는 동남아시아 국가들, 월드컵 2차 예선 때 홈에서 태국과 비겼고, 아시아컵에서 말레이시아에 고전하다 3-3으로 비겼으며, U-23 아시아 대회에서 인도네시아에게 패배해 파리 올림픽도 나가지 못하게 됐다. 이제는 "동남아시아 쯤이야 5-0 이상 이겨줘야 기본" 이라는 이 따위 후진적 발상은 버려야 한다. 축구인이나 국민들도 동남아시아 축구가 많이 성장했다는 사실을 인정하고 받아들여야 한다.
그런데 아직도 인정 안하는 국민들, 축구인들이 너무 많다. 그리고 그들과 못 이기면 감독 탓을 한다. 동남아시아 축구 얕보고 방심했다가 졌는데 무슨 변명이 필요하나? 그리고 그런 마음으로 경기하다가 그렇게 됐는데 그 또한 실력임을 왜 인정 못하지? 중동도 마찬가지.. 중동 축구를 굉장히 얕보고 "침대축구"니 뭐니 하면서 후진적이라 하는데 "침대축구"도 하나의 전술이고 중동 팀 나름대로 강팀을 이기는 전략이다. 근데 그걸 왜 비난하지? 실점한 팀 잘못이지 득점하고 드러눕는 팀을 왜 비난해? 실력있으면 먼저 골을 넣고 "침대축구"를 할 수 없게 만드는게 진정한 강팀이다. 그리고 귀화 선수들도 많아지고 있으며 이들에 의해 피지컬 싸움에도 이제는 뒤지지 않는다. 그것도 전략이고 투자다. 그 자체가 실력이며 이게 실전에서 발휘됐을 때 성공한 것이다. 즉, 중동도 예전과 같이 쉽게 무너지는 그런 팀이 아니다. 우리는 중동의 요르단에 패배해서 아시안 컵 결승에도 가지 못했다. 유효슈팅 0개의 처참한 완패, 옛날 우리한테 밥먹듯 깨지는 그 요르단이 아니다. 그러면 중동 팀들이 성장했고 우리보다 잘했음을 인정해야지, 모두 감독 탓으로만 몰아가더라. 요르단이 우리보다 더 잘한거고 실력이 있었던거다. 왜 인정못하는 것일까?
