윤석열 대통령과 함께 미국 하와이를 방문 중인 김건희 여사가 9일(현지시간) 고 이승만 초대 대통령이 설립한 한인기독교회를 방문해 "조국 독립을 위해 머나먼 타지서 이토록 애쓰셨던 이승만 초대 대통령의 잊힌 위업이 재조명되길 바란다"고 밝혔다.
김 여사는 이날 오전 한인 이민·독립운동 사적지를 찾아 "나라 독립을 염원하며 기도했을 한인들 모습이 눈앞에 그려진다"며 이같이 밝혔다고 김수경 대통령실 대변인이 서면브리핑에서 전했다.
김 여사는 지난 1938년 광화문 모양을 본떠 현 위치에 신축한 교회 외관을 둘러 봤다. 지난해 설치된 국가보훈부 독립운동 사적지 동판과 1985년 교인들이 건립한 고 이승만 대통령 동상을 보며 하와이 한인들 독립운동·한인기독교회 역사를 들었다.
이어 한인기독교회 내 전시관인 독립기념관·교회 예배당 내부를 돌아보며 100년 전부터의 다양한 사료를 살펴보고 "이곳 역사가 미주 한인 이민 역사이자 독립운동 역사 그 자체"라며 "조국 발전에 크게 기여한 하와이 동포들이 120여 년간 하와이·미국 사회 많은 분야에서도 활약하며 한·미동맹 가교역할을 해주셨다"고 감사를 표했다.
이제호 한인기독교회 담임목사는 김 여사 방문에 깊은 감사를 표하며 즉석 설교·기도로 "조국이 계속 발전해 번영하고 대통령 내외분이 큰 지혜를 가지며 이번 방미 일정 중 안전하시길 기원한다"고 말했다.
이에 김 여사는 "역사적 장소에서 설교를 듣고 기도하니 매우 뜻깊었다"며 하와이 동포분들과 교감하게 돼 기쁘다"고 화답했다.
올해 설립 106주년을 맞는 한인기독교회는 교인들 중 12명이 독립유공자로 추서된 곳으로 독립운동에 대한 교회 기여를 인정받아 지난해 국가보훈부가 독립운동 사적지 동판을 설치한 바 있다.
